though Marilyn Crispell, who likes Taylor and everybody says is like Taylor, hadn’t heard Taylor when she started, when she was like Taylor from the start.

Is this what some might call classical music?
  9:16am
Stepchild:

Beautiful morning here in NJ, beautiful music in this ether. Nice to start with solo Cecil.
  9:16am
Mark R:

For some excellent articles on Mr. Taylor, might I direct you to WFMU's own Kurt Gottschalk, who wrote several articles about him for various publications, and even interviewed him at least once. Google Kurt Gottschalk Cecil Taylor for some very fine writing to accompany this very, very fine music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am
Jeff Golick:

Hallo, @Brian. Packing? Spring cleaning, or moving?

@Scraps: yes, Crispell can sound Taylor-like, though I wasn't really aware that she hadn't heard CT before her start

@Stepchild: thanks for being here in the ether!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am
fred:

@Scraps: does she have his temper? I only got to see Cecil Taylor once, he was supposed to play with Amiri Baraka, but they had an... argument so they performed separately. Both were fiery characters, and now they're both gone
Avatar 9:21am
Scraps ¥§¥¥§¥:

She didn’t have a jazz education. I’m trying to look up Spirit Music, when Crispell was interviewed by Bob Rusch, where I got that information

I sometimes think solo Cecil is the best way to hear him. How did other musicians ever keep up with him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am
fred:

When I told about Cecil's death to a coworker who's a Jazz pianist, he was basically "good riddance". He hates free jazz, obviously
  9:25am
Stepchild:

My first time seeing Cecil perform was in Atlanta must have been mid-80s. Solo. I knew only Nefertiti, The Beautiful One — slightly. I was unprepared. Devastating.

  9:35am

I don’t believe Sam on that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am
Jeff Golick:

I think it entails a wider understanding of "composed," something beyond "notated music."
  9:39am
Stepchild:

Cecil spoke and wrote of improvisation and life in the instant moment. Notes and gestures certainly came from there. Structures another thing definitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am
Jeff Golick:

This Willisau concert, btw, is available at bandcamp: ceciltaylor.bandcamp.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am
Uncle Michael:

I must go, too. I'll be with you all in spirit, if not in the moment. Thanks, Jeff.
  9:42am
Stepchild:

As a notable quote it gets into an untenable opposition between composition and improvisation. But it also makes sense to say it because of the impression/assertion of many that Cecil was just doing random flailing of an unstructured kind -including fellow musicians cough Miles

I guess if I were a dancer rather than a talker, I might think of it that way. But as far as foot movement is concerned, it sounds more like sidewalk traffic than dancing. Or maybe sidewalk + street -- like for instance, just there some heavy trucks rumbled thru.
  9:52am
Stepchild:

  9:54am

Dancing is more rhythmic and repetitive in one place. This, by contrast, is "going somewhere".

I think it was Gary Giddens who described Taylor's playing as his 10 fingers acted like 10 drummers on the piano. The dance talk reminded me of that.
  10:09am
Mark R:

I can't imagine any other show in the world that would play an entire concert like this. Thank you so much, Jeff! This is the best Cecil Taylor tribute I could ever imagine. I only have his "Unit Structures" album, his part of the "Jazz Composers Orchestra" album and the three songs he contributed to Gil Evans' "Into the Hot" album, so this solo concert has been an absolute revelation. Thanks so much for sharing this with us this morning. And yes, it is indeed an absolutely gorgeous sunny morning in NJ (and I assume most of the northeast). Made only more beautiful by the fantastic music you've chosen for us today.

@Scraps @9:56: I do indeed know Sorabji. I have John Ogdon's Opus Clavicembalisticum and assorted other recitals. Many years ago I asked Matthew Shipp if he knew Sorabji's music. At the time he didn't, and I've been meaning ever since to send him OC. Haven't done so.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm

@Dean: that could have come in handy at the show I was yesterday. They clearly wanted to play more, the venue dimmed the lights on stage, after a while then cut them out. Nothing like Billy Joel to drive people out, they should have thought of this
  12:17pm

This illustrates why nobody has ever been to a Billy Joel concert.
