This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

it's a really special album. i believe all the parts are played by Roland Young himself, so that seems to be three manifestations of his self on the cover

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
coelacanth∅:

i showed up 2 hours late and a few minutes early! ...Leon Thomas is one singer i really can't stand, but the music here is straight up stellar
Avatar 9:05pm
Flash Strap:

he's hit and miss imo but I mostly get down with him. he has a more straight-ahead mode that I often dislike intensely (esp. on later releases), tho i think it worked very well on Willow Weep For Me
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm
chresti:

New to me- this Leon- such a frenetic pace
Avatar 9:06pm
Flash Strap:

plus, yeah, he plays with top guys
Avatar 9:07pm
Flash Strap:

@chresti: i know, it's just demented
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
coelacanth∅:

he sure does. for a long time i thought i didn't like Pharoah Sanders because i kept hearing only recordings with Thomas on them - i thought it was Sanders singing. (or "yodeling"...[it's not really yodeling])
Avatar 9:12pm
northguineahills:

@coel: I thought it was the Pharaoh as well....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
coelacanth∅:

ha that's funny ngh!
well, rest in peace Leon.
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

from what I understand it's a weird, totally singular attempt to approximate a pygmy vocal technique (i've seen it credited as "pygmy yodelling" or some such thing). i've never gotten the impression it's particularly rigorous, but I don't know

it's sort of a grift but I think it's cool, i love him on those Pharoah recordings
Avatar 9:16pm
Flash Strap:

but it's not hard to imagine why someone wouldn't dig it, i should say
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
coelacanth∅:

i used to do that as a child. ...i have this stupid thing that makes me appreciate some things less if i can do them!
(i know. stupid.)
Avatar 9:18pm
Flash Strap:

it is the same with me and certain art techniques, tho I try to stifle the reaction when i can
Avatar 9:20pm
Flash Strap:

this Kamili is quite a bit earlier than the Kalima, but it sounds as though the reverse is true. that Elvin Jones record is the real deal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
coelacanth∅:

i think too, maybe - that because it's limited in it's application...like the bagpipes -i might be able to like it if it was only a rare showing; but it's his thing, and it's always the same.
...anyway, i'm not dead yet - i might come around to it some day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
coelacanth∅:

the Elvin Jones machine blew my socks off. now my feet are cold.

very high probability that it was Leon again, performing that vocal expectoration. he is elsewhere on Kwanza but not credited on this track

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm

unfortunately i was in the kitchen and didn't hear any vocals in the Shepp track. i say unfortunately because if there's a vocal that could be Leon but it's not so obvious that might be good for me to hear - to exercise my open-ness.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm

i once, when i was around 22?, collected an old briefcase full of pages ripped out of catalogues and such - to make a collage book. it was going to be like a mockery of ads and marketing (but with some beauty, as well as humor). i think i got 4 pages done then life happened.
