Evening all. There's nothing like being live...

@Lucky
It's a fine line between the real and the vividly imagined.

Good Evening. Very psyched for the live set

I don't know why but I like listening live way more. It goes for all the shows I love on WFMU, and radio in general.

Holy crow: "Still trying to make the full fledged transition *from* archive listening to live. Starting to wonder if my *existence* is in archive." My typos are live anyway...

I wonder what the West High Auditorium in Anchorage looks like?

I miss the old time slot but I still try to show up for Live

Jeff Conklin:

It looks like a HS, i drove by it when I was in Anchorage...Not the inside of course...
Avatar 10:08pm
Adamsworth:

I looked it up, it's pretty small! That would have been so killer to see them play there.

man, that scarlet fire from a couple weeks ago was amazing! i love the roars from the crowd
Avatar 10:12pm

Love AUD tapes for the crowd ecstasies....

This is what everyone is complaining about? Maybe some of the keyboard sounds haven't aged well in the taste maker scene, but the playing sounds happening.

I don't know, I usually drive by the insides of auditoriums... malls, Blues Brothers style..
  10:13pm
Ollie:

@Adamsworth: Imagine what the, um, aroma of that venue must've been that night.
  10:14pm
Woodland Prana Man:

Hey Jeff, always a please to tune in right in the middle of a jam!!!!
  10:14pm
Agent Peter:

School is about 1800-1900, so assume auditorium capacity is about that? Would be roughly the same as Marin Civic Center, which is the smallest show I ever saw live.
Avatar 10:15pm
Adamsworth:

I was listening to the Doom and Gloom From the Tomb blog "choice cuts" of the first 15 years of Bob Dylan Never Ending Tour bootlegs today...it's pretty great.
  10:15pm
Carmichael:

I took a friend to a benefit in SF many years ago, with all the great Bay Area bands playing. Garcia, Weir and Hart came out for a brief 3 song acoustic set. My friend, who despises the Dead, heard a long rambling version of Friend of the Devil that won him over. Jerry played the hell out of that, over and over.

Hi Jeff,
can't wait to see Träd, Gräs & Stenar at the Chapel in SF Sep 21st. Would not even know about them was it not for your program! Yeah!
Avatar 10:19pm

I saw the dead a few months before Jerry died just out of curiosity, before I was a fan, and loved the atmosphere. It took John Oswald's "Grayfolded" to unlock the gate for me...

The manager of Blue Cheer said they were so loud “the air turned to cottage cheese”.

GP just about ready, gonna have them hit at the top of the hour, so refresh yourselves accordingly
  10:22pm
Ollie:

@Carmichael: I never heard that before, makes me want to have seen them even more, I have a feeling their studio albums don't do them justice

My Dad worked for John Scher for a long time and I got to sit behind the sound board at the old Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ for lots of shows. I remember the Dead shows there as being pretty great
  10:27pm
Carmichael:

@ollie, exactly. I was tired of hearing Truckin a million times, and at this concert they were just one of many bands. Incredible “aha” moment when Jerry just went off on his Martin. We thought, so that’s what all the hype is about.
  10:27pm
Agent Peter:

@medson One of my favorite Capitol Theater sets was Jorma opening for Jerry & John Kahn. He played solo acoustic in a tux and he was flawless. Has to be a recording of it floating around somewhere..
Avatar 10:29pm
Jeff Conklin:

@medson: Damn thats awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

@Agent Peter good thing the Capitol had in house video equipment. So much footage to watch online
Avatar 10:30pm

@agent peter I just looked it up on youtube, and there are a few Jorma solo at the Capital Theater performances!

I just remembered the one time I saw Wooden Shijps they were on an double booked show at a mediocre restaurant I worked at, and a pop punk band played for an hour, so WS only got to play like 10 minutes...AAARRRGH.
  10:37pm

Don't see it in there. Would have been '83 or '84.
