	12:38pm JakeGould: Anyway, I want it to cool down. I actually experience an urban mirage a few days ago. It was so hot and I decided to walk 20+ blocks anyway. I end up in a grocery and am staring at the candy and all of the labels are blurring into one. Somehow I was on the edge of fainting for a few blocks and managed not to faint or get hit by a car.

	1:05pm Rickwaukee: A world somewhat familiar but "off axis" "exotic" "new" "to be discovered". Not necessarily exploited. No getting around European/American seeing everything from stance of superiority though
	1:18pm Mayuko: @Rickwaukee I find it tough to speak clearly since it's complicated due to many flipping in this topic. Something "to be discovered" from the west now is something 'to discover' for the orient too, because the 'orient' is internalizing western view and disconnected from tradition. At the same time 'orient' is presenting this thing that's discovered as 'tradition" despite the disconnection.
	1:19pm fred: I gave up on the Orientalism angle, probably for wrong reasons. I was just finding out about Edward Said when I was told I was an oppressor because I didn't know Frantz Fanon. I should have read him, but I just gave up. Very Bad Choice
	1:20pm Mayuko: @Rickwaukee like when Japanese artist paint Geisha woman dressed in kimono. We no longer have much active geisha culture and I have no idea how to wear kimono even. But people in the west like that visual and Japanese people sell it as "tradition" though it's been dead for long and has nothing to do with us really.

	1:25pm Jeff Golick: This isn't about Orientalism, per se, but this discussion is reminding me of a very interesting book called A Whale Hunt, by Robert Sullivan. It's about a Pacific Northwest tribe that regains the right to hunt for whales in the traditional fashion, only no one really remembers how to do it anymore.

I've been trying to improve my handwriting and pen use and from what my correspondent tells me, both are better since even this winter. The music's been a lovely complement to the slow, careful production of words.

	1:34pm JakeGould: @P-90: Using that analogy, very few U.S. re-enactors ever are taken as representative of the whole of U.S. culture. Nobody ever says that Civil War re-enactors or people in Colonial Willuamburg or at the Alamo are representative of the whole of U.S. culture. Not the same with the way Western looks at other cultures.
	1:34pm Dean: I recall checking out a volume from a university library for a colleague at work in the '80s, The Lost World of Irian Jaya, as he prepared to travel to IJ on a vacation. The book included photos of the tribes people, who not long before had never encountered Westerners. In the photos, they rode motorcycles and drank Coca Cola. Etran de L'Air channeling Jerry Garcia, or vice versa.
	1:35pm paul b: When I was a kid - and this was probably several several decades ago. I learned about the world by reading an illustrated book series (My Bookhouse) put together in the 1920's by Olive Beaupre Miller. I admit it did instill in me a fondness for romantic exoticism that I could never completely shake. That the world is only occasionally as magical as those books suggested I hold against no one or thing.

I think it's somewhat died down lately (there used to be cowboy and indian outdoor festivals in East Germany).

Like the indigenous Ainu people in Northern Japan, I have (and played here) recordings of their ritual starting with "we can not do this like our ancestors could, but we will do our best so please forgive us" Because their lifestyle has been changed due to oppressors = Japanese main islanders, which I am part of. And our life styles have changed because of American influence. Nobody is connected to roots really in this industrialized world it feels. And the attempts to re-connect to roots can often be used by nationalists.

	1:50pm Mayuko: @P-90 yeah, I know some young people who study ethnology and trying to truly re-connect with traditions and roots, without exorcizing/internalizing western views. Who live in country side and do a lot of research there, connect with locals, revitalizing old handcrafts etc. I feel like this is relatively new movement there in Japan. And I think they are trying to be cosmopolitan in their approach too. Just not in the samurai geisha way I guess.

	2:20pm Jeff Moore: One of the words I dislike the most of all is "exotic" – because, for one thing, it's a word which conveys essentially zero information about its supposed subject, but rather only tells you things about the person using it (kind of like the less-icky "weird" in that way) – but also, and mostly, because of the creepy way I've so often seen it used (as a fetishistic, objectifying way to refer to women of some race or combo thereof other than the speaker's). Eww.

	2:27pm Mayuko: @Jeff Thanks for the insight! I agree re: 'exotic' is one way of sex-objectifying women in 'the orient'. Actually I only came to really think of that aspect when Joe McGasko pointed it out for me a while ago! I guess he shares that disgust with you. I've been trying to put this idea of flipping 'exoticism' together for a marathon premium for a while now, but its too big topic for me so far! Super interesting though.

Something "to be discovered" from the west now is something 'to discover' for the orient too, because the 'orient' is internalizing western view and disconnected from tradition. At the same time 'orient' is presenting this thing that's discovered as 'tradition" despite the disconnection.

Nobody ever says that Civil War re-enactors or people in Colonial Willuamburg or at the Alamo are representative of the whole of U.S. culture. 	1:34pm Dean: I recall checking out a volume from a university library for a colleague at work in the '80s, The Lost World of Irian Jaya, as he prepared to travel to IJ on a vacation. The book included photos of the tribes people, who not long before had never encountered Westerners. In the photos, they rode motorcycles and drank Coca Cola. Etran de L'Air channeling Jerry Garcia, or vice versa.

I learned about the world by reading an illustrated book series (My Bookhouse) put together in the 1920's by Olive Beaupre Miller. I admit it did instill in me a fondness for romantic exoticism that I could never completely shake. Like the indigenous Ainu people in Northern Japan, I have (and played here) recordings of their ritual starting with "we can not do this like our ancestors could, but we will do our best so please forgive us" Because their lifestyle has been changed due to oppressors = Japanese main islanders, which I am part of. And our life styles have changed because of American influence. Nobody is connected to roots really in this industrialized world it feels. And the attempts to re-connect to roots can often be used by nationalists.

	1:50pm Mayuko: @P-90 yeah, I know some young people who study ethnology and trying to truly re-connect with traditions and roots, without exorcizing/internalizing western views. Who live in country side and do a lot of research there, connect with locals, revitalizing old handcrafts etc. I feel like this is relatively new movement there in Japan. And I think they are trying to be cosmopolitan in their approach too. Just not in the samurai geisha way I guess.

	2:20pm Jeff Moore: One of the words I dislike the most of all is "exotic" – because, for one thing, it's a word which conveys essentially zero information about its supposed subject, but rather only tells you things about the person using it (kind of like the less-icky "weird" in that way) – but also, and mostly, because of the creepy way I've so often seen it used (as a fetishistic, objectifying way to refer to women of some race or combo thereof other than the speaker's). Eww.

Actually I only came to really think of that aspect when Joe McGasko pointed it out for me a while ago! I guess he shares that disgust with you. I've been trying to put this idea of flipping 'exoticism' together for a marathon premium for a while now, but its too big topic for me so far! Super interesting though.
