@fred: I can only agree.

@TDK60: yes, Berkshires. Lovely country.

Jeff, I lived in West Stockbridge, Mass. for a few years, long ago.

Oh, nice, @TDK60.

Hi Jeff and all! Missed the Berkshire talk, do love it up there. Spent many summers there. Was in Otis for a long weekend last month

Andy Statman playing in Brooklyn tonight, Jalopy Theater. Looks like a duet, may be bluegrass (not clear from the promo-Michael Daves, who has the gig, and Jalopy, both seem to play mostly bluegrass ): Also not sure about ticket availability (couldn't order on line will have to call later) Haven't seen him in a while ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @doctorjazz! Sounds like a fun gig.

I saw BADBADNOTGOOD at Prospect Park on Thursday evening. Left early.

doctorjazz:

Oh, and Happy Birthday Roscoe Mitchell (this past Friday). Nice set!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42am
doctorjazz:

Oh, that's too bad, @Jeff,but, at the admission price, you can go, check out the music, and no big deal if you don't like it and leave. I lived on 9th street for a few years (Carroll for a few more), used to just walk over to see the shows. Haven't gotten there this season yet, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah, the price is right. Some evenings when I'm walking the dog I go by the park to hear what's going down.

Sad sign of the times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
fred:

Sad sign of my aging: I haven't seen a single show last month (I don't think this had happened in the past decade or so). Part of the blame falls on one of the few venues operating in summer being shut down for the whole month by police over noise complaints. But I've also been lazy
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:10am
doctorjazz:

That is sad, Fred. Love those things (don't have time to get to many).
I see Montclair has its annual outdoor jazz fest this Saturday. Oliver Lake, Eddie Palmieri, and organizer Christian McBride are on the schedule. Not even too far away for me.

The track name "Girls with Radical Haircuts" reminds me of DFW's "Girl with Curious Hair", which takes place in part at a Keith Jarret concert

I'm no longer patient with folks who doubt climate change. I have one word for them now: "Shutup!" (Rude, I admit.) And that's my rant for the day..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am

Diggin' the day's sounds at the halfway mark!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jeff Golick:

@fred: that's a great connection. (Haven't read that DFW.)

@TDK60: that's about the nicest thing you could say to them at this point.

@ljfw: thanks, mang!
Avatar 10:53am
TDK60:

Jeff: thanks. (Yes, they have a right to their *totally erroneous* opinions.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am
fred:

@Jeff: If you read it you'll see that the "girl with curious hair" isn't the one with a radical haircut
  10:56am
Dean:

I assume that by "climate change" you both mean "human contributions to climate change." That's where the deniers throw a wrench into the works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am
Jeff Golick:

Helloo, @Dean. Yeah, I suppose that's the distinction they draw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
Jeff Golick:

I mean, why should anything we do have consequences?
  11:05am
Dean:

Global consequences. Thank you very much, Henry Ford.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am

Interesting set. I have to admit I'm ignorant of Tomasz Stanko's music. I'm afraid my knowledge of Polish musicians is limited to noise
  11:12am
rw:

Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am
Jeff Golick:

'mornin', @rw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Jeff Golick:

@fred: my knowledge of Polish musicians is similarly limited. Is there a noise scene in Poland?
Avatar 11:19am
TDK60:

Fred: me too, ignorant of Stanko and most Polish music. Randomly came across Polish group Innercity Ensemble. Sort of post-rock meets jazz, sorta like Tortoise maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
fred:

@Jeff: I think so, or maybe it's just that there's a channel from there to Paris. They do have a vibrant scene for experimental visual arts. The political situation is threatening that, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am
fred:

Come to think of it, here's another piece of evidence: back when I had a blog to write notes about shows I was seeing, the posts about noise were sometimes translated into Polish on a website there. I don't know how that happened (I was notified of the translation, but never contacted by whoever did that, having stated a "all rights reversed" policy beforehand)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
Jeff Golick:

That's fascinating, @fred. And a little thrilling, I imagine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am
fred:

@Jeff: It felt weird, mostly. The weirdest was when I found out I was quoted on an Israeli composer's site, as if I had been a legitimate source. The time when a band asked me for authorization to quote me in their press book came close second.
I eventually quit because I got too much grief over it from people who didn't like what I wrote.

Zbigniew Seifert
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
fred:

Always a treat to find out about a musician I didn't know about, so thanks Jeff. Too bad it often takes them dying
  11:44am
Dean:

Recently acquired a Seifert group's 2CD set from Poland, but neither disk would track on my player, so I had to return it. Boo hoo. He died quite young in the late '70s.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am

Listener Gregory:

Just catching up after returning from vacation. If I might, I'll add a slight Tomasz Stanko anecdote.
I had heard his early ECM albums and enjoyed them. I took the opportunity to hear him live in London, probably in '86. My main reaction to the show, which was beautiful, was "Wow, there are drums!" I knew that ECM had its own ideas about the sound of jazz, but it was striking how much percussion there was in the live group compared to how little there is in the recordings.
It all just goes to show that you should get out of the house once in a while and hear music live.
Thanks for the tribute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that story, @Listener Gregory, and for checking out the show!
