The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Zakary Thaks issued an audition video of themselves playing a set of songs in order to promote themselves to clubs and concert promoters. I wish more bands had thought of this bright idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm

Hi Daffodil2!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm

I'd love to see that, Mailman Tom!
Avatar 8:15pm

Mailman Tom - yeah - that video is AMAZING!!!
Avatar 8:16pm

I bought it on DVD years ago at a place in NYC called Kim's Video on St. Mark's Place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Gina Bacon:

Good old Kim's!
Avatar 8:17pm

I used to spend hours and hours in Kim's Video. And then go over to Yaffa Cafe for dinner!

I remember Kim's Video

St. Marks was SO much fun back then.

Avatar 8:20pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

I used to do stand up comedy on St. Marks at Holiday Cocktail Lounge
Avatar 8:21pm
bigplanetnoise:

Everybody on this thread has had great times on St. Marks! Does anyone remember the original Venus Records spot?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Gina Bacon:

The old stomping ground...
Avatar 8:24pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

I once walked past Rocket Science Records on St. Marks and saw the Friendsound LP in the window (I remember my Uncle Jimmy had it and I played it when I was a real little kid). When I got home to look it up I discovered Autosalvage in the process
Avatar 8:24pm
Mailman Tom:

I went shopping at Venus Records on a regular basis. I still have several LPs with their price sticker on them.
Avatar 8:27pm
bigplanetnoise:

I used to spend untold hours at Rocket Scientist when they were on Carmine St. I learned a lot with each trip there... and I sure dropped a lot of dough!
Avatar 8:28pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

I was broke back then, I used to save money by walking from Penn Station to St. Marks and buying that $1 slice pizza
Avatar 8:29pm
bigplanetnoise:

Gray's Papaya!
Avatar 8:30pm
bigplanetnoise:

It "helps with digestion!"
Avatar 8:31pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

You'll appreciate this, once I got promoted at my job in 2011 and made better money I treated myself with that Sundazed psych LP package, it was 10 LPs for something around $100. Clear Light, USA, Bubble Puppy, Mad River - stuff like that
Avatar 8:32pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

The Syndicate, bought this LP at Double Decker as a blind buy
Avatar 8:32pm
bigplanetnoise:

That's very cool, Alex! Belated thanks! And I still can't believe you sold all your vinyl!
Avatar 8:32pm
bigplanetnoise:

Double Decker in Allentown?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Gina Bacon:

Nice, Alex!
Avatar 8:34pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

Yes, the very one. And yeah, sold them all. I miss them but my life isn't where it was back then; never home, small apartment, using my money for my future. And I made MP3s of my whole collection
Avatar 8:35pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

I wish I still had that mix tape off YouTube I made from back then, this Birdwatchers song was on it
Avatar 8:35pm
bigplanetnoise:

Double Decker is one of my most fave stores on the planet. And I don't get there nearly enough. It's been a couple years for me.
Avatar 8:36pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

Every Double Decker trip was at least a $200 endeavor
  8:37pm
Tim from LH:

The Birdwatchers is new to me, but that’s why I love listening to BPN!
Avatar 8:37pm
bigplanetnoise:

Jamie's prices are SO fair. And the things that he turns up! I salivate at his Instagram posts. And - eeesh - no mail order!
Avatar 8:37pm

Avatar 8:38pm

Did I just hear a harp on "I didn't believe her"??
Avatar 8:40pm
bigplanetnoise:

YOU DID!!!!
Avatar 8:40pm
AlexClarkCaprio:

I bought a lot of records you put out at Double Decker, they always had RSD stuff from previous years too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Gina Bacon:

Sounds like a harp to me!
Avatar 8:41pm
Daffodil2:

Boy, why didn't they call me for this session?
Avatar 8:41pm

I think you might have been overqualified, Daffodil!
Avatar 8:42pm
Daffodil2:

I could have been a star....!!!

You could have been paid in beer and cigarettes!
Avatar 8:43pm
Daffodil2:

And there's a problem with that??
Avatar 8:45pm

Not a problem as far as I'm concerned!
