Phyllis Chen & Nathan David  I Am Like The First Note Of A Scale...   Favoriting The Other Mozart  Self-Released  2018  "The Other Mozart" is a monodrama created by Sylvia Milo telling the true, forgotten story of Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart, the sister of Amadeus - a prodigy, virtuoso and composer, who performed throughout Europe with her brother, to equal acclaim, but her work and her story faded away, lost to history. The play is based on facts, stories and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family's humorous and heartbreaking letters. None of Nannerl’s music survives. Phyllis Chen & Nathan Davis took on the task of writing into this erasure, not presuming to represent her compositions but rather attempting to depict a fertile musical imagination. They used instruments and objects that would have been intimately familiar to Nannerl: clavichord, harpsichord, music boxes, clock chimes, and church bells, as well as hand fans and teacups.  *   1:11:18 (Pop-up)

I like faceless music and often find it works better when a creator's personality is abstracted or removed. I met Olan Mill once and she was nice to me, I particularly liked her name so one day I stole it."    1:17:45 (Pop-up)

Leslie Ross  Water   Favoriting Drop By Drop, Suddenly  XI Records  2018  2-CD set / The electronics used were created explicitly for each composition using the computer-based program MAX/MSP. Save for the unconventional 15 microphones of the "prepared bassoon," these recordings include pieces with no sound processing whatsoever, as well as pieces that do involve sound processing and multi-tracking. Importantly, however, any processing is made in real time, not post-recording. All recordings are single-take recordings where four speaker channels along with room microphones have been mixed down to stereo. Key clicks occasionally get picked up in a loop recording to return sometimes processed, sometimes not, while in circular breathing a multiphonic might drop out before sounding again. What might sound like clicks or occasional drop outs on some pieces are not overlooked mastering faults but the result of this live processing, presenting these pieces as they would be in performance.  *   1:40:07 (Pop-up)

Kate Bush  And Dream of Sheep (Live)   Favoriting single  EMI America  1985  orig version from her 5th album, "Hounds of Love" / To accompany the release of the live single, the vocal was performed live while filming Kate lying in the huge water tank at Pinewood Studios. This was to create a sense of realism, as the character in the song is lost at sea. However it became more realistic than Kate had imagined. She spent so long in the water during the first day of filming that she contracted mild hypothermia. She recovered after a day off and carried on filming. Everyone agreed it had added to the authenticity of the performance. This film was then projected onto a large oval screen which hung above the stage during the performances of her live show / When Bush was a teenager, her family produced a demo tape with over 50 of her compositions, which was turned down by record labels. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd received the demo from Ricky Hopper, a mutual friend of Gilmour and the Bush family. Impressed with what he heard, Gilmour helped the 16-year-old Bush get a more professional-sounding demo tape recorded that would be more saleable to the record companies. Three tracks in total were recorded and paid for by Gilmour. The tape was produced by Gilmour's friend Andrew Powell, who would go on to produce Bush's first 2 albums, & sound engineer Geoff Emerick, who had previously worked with the Beatles    2:36:18 (Pop-up)

@Carol: Happy to hear you're feeling better in the DJ seat after a hectic week. I know the feeling. *oof* Did you ever spend time at Click and Drag? Your genre coverage and selects are giving me little twinges of nostalgia.

@Dances with Moomins: IMPOSTER! Just kidding ;) For some reason I imagined you as a younger, genuine Fin. If you date back to Upsala Days you're a serious OG. How massive is your FMU Ts and swag closet? Are you retired in Finland? Sorry for sounding overly personal but I'm just fascinated by the NJ -> Finland story.
