This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Covarrubias' work on this book is gorgeous, but it really is mind-boggling how often he'll directly contradict the details in the text. the book is all descriptions and barely any plot, so it strikes me weird to just draw things that specifically aren't described.

My main recall scene from Ed Wood bio-flick is one of his typically awful scenes being shot, and then the set is accidently and quite obviously bumped by actor and shake-wobbled. He's asked about a retake. He says with pleasant enthusiasm that it's fine.

there was a period where I was researching Pandit and all these otherwise pretty interesting articles on postcolonial identity myths were behaving as though he were an actual Indian man, from India, which he is not. one of those strange holes in knowledge that you see from time to time. i think he's from St. louis, and he's African-American

If you snap a paddle in a starfish canoe, does it regrow/repair itself?
Avatar 8:58pm

@LD: basically, yeah. it's actually extremely spare, compared to the film work. all done on custom synths in his home studio, for his own label. I don't know how hard he tried to get them in the production circuit though. they're basically private press, or pure research, like a lot of Oram's or Raymond Scott's stuff

so, that Umiliani track maybe wasn't an actual wooden percussion instrument?
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

that last one probably was, yeah. i don't know about the tracks from Polinesia, i shouldn't have said it was "all done" on synths, i just meant that that was his big thing on those records. real solo in the studio recordings, with a big emphasis on exploring his machines, even while he's playing with exotic wthnomusicology

Nope, I have a buncha those Umiliani Omicrons but have never bothered to really research 'em. Clearly they were manufactured as themed sets, if not marketed that way. (That's why I wondered if they were used in the library sense in the '70s and '80s

at the least, they're as library-adjacent as you can be, down to the conceptual framing and aesthetic. The lines blur there, esp. with guys like Umiliani who did do so much library work.
