	♥ 10:30am Sem: Hello, Brian. A smashing Guy Fawkes time at Lewes, it seems. Visted some friends back in the 80s, teaching at University of Sussex, and living in Kingston, near Lewes. So know some of that area.
	10:32am Listener Gregory: The Casals stands alone, but nonetheless, it is important for others to do their own take on these things, as they can bring out other aspects of the music or try different interpretations. BTW, I don't think it's that rare for a viola to do the cello pieces... I've heard it before, but don't ask for details.
	♥ 10:35am Brian in UK: Sem, A few years ago we stayed in West Firle just down the road. All the villages around Lewes have their own bonfires from late September on a kind of rota. We walked into the pub and were confronted by what I imagine would have par in New Orleans. Man at the bar in top hat and feathers with skull face. It got my attention. The problem is that now it is so busy.
	10:36am Dean: Wasn't implying that it's rare, @LG, but that every new interpretation of Bach, in particular, can be a new discovery. Same goes for many composers, sure. I've been listening to various artists' takes on Shostakovich's preludes and fugues and string quartets: all different and new. But somehow Bach always seems especially fresh.

	10:44am Listener Gregory: To answer my own question: The title given on the cover of the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript was Suites à Violoncello Solo senza Basso (Suites for cello solo without bass).
	10:45am Dean: Pretty sure Jordi Savall played one (or two?) on viola da gamba when I heard his recital at Claremont a long time ago.

	10:53am Dean: A massive survey of reviews of classical recordings published in 2002 has this to say about the cello suites: "The cello was finally coming into its own as a solo instrument in the early 18th century, but again Bach perceived possibilities in the instrument that were unnoticed by others." The author writes "again," because this section follows immediately after the section devoted to the violin sonatas and partitas.

	11:06am Dean: Discovered that the Savall concert was on Sunday, April 27, 1986, in Claremont, per the LA Times. Montserrat Figueras was to perform, but I now recall Savall announcing that she was ill. He and Rejean Poirier (harpsichord) delivered the program. I remember being disappointed that I couldn't hear Figueras live. Finally heard her not long before she died here in Berkeley.

We walked into the pub and were confronted by what I imagine would have par in New Orleans. Man at the bar in top hat and feathers with skull face. It got my attention. The problem is that now it is so busy.
	10:36am Dean: Wasn't implying that it's rare, @LG, but that every new interpretation of Bach, in particular, can be a new discovery. Same goes for many composers, sure. I've been listening to various artists' takes on Shostakovich's preludes and fugues and string quartets: all different and new. But somehow Bach always seems especially fresh.

	10:53am Dean: A massive survey of reviews of classical recordings published in 2002 has this to say about the cello suites: "The cello was finally coming into its own as a solo instrument in the early 18th century, but again Bach perceived possibilities in the instrument that were unnoticed by others." The author writes "again," because this section follows immediately after the section devoted to the violin sonatas and partitas.

Montserrat Figueras was to perform, but I now recall Savall announcing that she was ill. He and Rejean Poirier (harpsichord) delivered the program. I remember being disappointed that I couldn't hear Figueras live. Finally heard her not long before she died here in Berkeley.
