Halo! Excellent N&M piece....

My mom must've been a closet Nichols and May fan. She always used to greet me the exact same way on the telephone, in a comically affected voice like that.

Did people really once call their moms "honey"?! Or maybe that's a weird regional thing?!

Just wondering ... How many shows or years are needed before a person can be considered a "veteran DJ" at WFMU? Congrats and pixie dust to all who have achieved this distinguished milestone.

Well hello there everyone! Thanks for hanging. @Ken, it happens without anyone noticing; suddenly you stop feeling like the new kid.

@KFHP, it's unclear precisely when conversion occurs, but once you are an Ancient One, the lesser beings of the free-form temple must bring fresh vinyl sacrifices to your altar in fealty while chanting your unholy vocal fry.

Rich in Washington:

When I think "veteran DJ", I think about having to endure hardships of community radio; overnight shifts with little evidence of listeners beyond one or two insane callers, the next DJ showing up, having to pull their slot, getting a great show slot cancelled and having to get to the back of the line for a regular show, spending time in 'radio jail' (suspension due to a FCC Safe Harbor violation), missing great live music happenings because it's happening on a show night, inter-station politics, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Rich in Washington:

I meant next DJ NOT showing up in the above.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Krys O.:

Rich in Washington, I fulfilled those criteria over 25 years ago, but there is no grandfather/grandmother clause.

Note for suggestion box: Can there be a screening of A Clockwork Orange in Monty Hall some time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
listener james from westwood:

The only time this soundtrack left my Walkman for spring semester, freshman year of college, was to put "The Man-Machine" or Numan's "The Pleasure Principle" in. I fell hard for synth.

.. a screening WITHOUT the eye clamps, that is.

mrmikestandsir:

there was the soundtrack to a clockwork Orange and then there was a separate release on Columbia of music that Wendy Carlos (then Walter) released that was all electronica interpretations of the classical compositions found on the soundtrack.
  5:37pm
mrmikestandsir:

sorry not electronica… Electronic synt,hesizer

melinda:

Digging this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm

@mrmikestandsir, I believe you're thinking of "Switched on Bach", a massive success
Avatar 5:43pm
TDK60:

My dad had 'Switched On Bach,' the first popular synth album, maybe. '68?
Avatar 5:46pm
northguineahills:

Gas's "Narcopop" also works for me

My thrifting days got me all of Walter/Wendy Carlos's recs, I love them all!

I thought it was Tuesday for a moment there. And it turns out it was a premium from Micah's show. I may spend too much time listening to WFMU . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
Rob W:

Actually I looked up the Clockwork / Wendy thing... apparently Wendy (then Walter) created a lot of music that was intended for the film soundtrack (in other words, the music on Wendy's Clockwork album was first-generation, not a 'cover version' of the OST). But ultimately little was used in the film or on the official OST. Of course, as much as we love Wendy Carlos, one of the strongest elements of the film's audio track was the use of the traditional classical orchestrations - really jarring and powerful in the context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
Scott Williams:

@Rob W, the FMU library does have Carlos' complete music recorded for the soundtrack, including the amazing 14-min version of Timesteps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
Rob W:

Very interesting... thanks Scott!
  5:58pm
melinda:

@TDK my sister was going through my dad's stuff recently and found Switched on Bach, which kind of surprised me since he wasn't into synth. Happy to add it to my collection.

Thanks everybody! See you next week

Ride Capt. Ride? In the past 2 weeks I've heard Hamilton Joe Frank and Reynolds, Cornelius Bros and Rock The Boat. I don't think it adds anything to the brand.
