Ahhh one of my favorite songs! Love this Pharoah. Probably the most played song on WCBN in Ann Arbor - where I learned about the greatness that is freeform

Good morning. Is anyone else sitting at their job with absolutely no work to do?

Hope to see a Pharaoh full concert. I heard him (among others) perform one tune at Ornette Coleman's memorial. Wow, did he sing on his sax.

To some degree, ANY personal opinion about the music is kind of uninteresting: I love this! This is awesome! This is boring! I hate this group! Who really cares? On the other hand, I do this all the time, and I really am thrilled to hear Steve Lacy being played. So, if we permit gushing positive opinions, I think negative views should be accepted with grace. IMHO.

Gregory, I find that to be a false equivalency. "I like this" is often an expression of appreciation for the job the host is doing. "I don't like this" obtusely avoids fact that listening isn't compulsory.

  11:05am

@Uncle, I see your point. But comments are not just to the host. Often they are a way to get a conversation started. For the record, I enjoy the variety played on WFMU, and I don't expect to like everything that's played. If I say I don't like something (which I seldom do), it's not intended as a complaint. That Steve Lacy was awesome, by the way!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am

What sorts of conversations have you seen started by expressing your dislike for something, Gregory? Are you challenging other people to defend it? If you want to know what other people appreciate about something, a question might serve better than a condemnation.

As Ken used to say, when you listen to fmu, you’re either running to turn it up or turn it off. Much like life itself

The best thing I saw on tour with the Dead was Carlos Santana when I was on the green mesculin. I lost my mind - almost made it to the stage like five times but kept getting "bounced" I could "see" the music, maan. It kept pulling me forward. Seriuosly.

But the same source, etymologically, no?

There was a good conversation in Destination:Out among people who love Bill Frisell and those who find him boring. At the end, we all felt better for it.

I believe there is only one wfmu dj that I'd usually prefer not to listen to, and I have to admit, that's an impressive trait.

those were supposed to be "air quotes"

@Gregory: Frisell: is both amazing and boring, depending on the album, but I still love him live.

I hate it when people diss the dj. I did it once and felt so bad I didn't log in for weeks. It's a dick move.

Heya Scott and gobblers. I really like Bill Frisell, but I'm sure he can be a *challenge* to some listeners.

Can anyone think of any pastry related songs tho??
Avatar 11:26am

@ben abs: It didn't help that said dj was terse when my band was vacating the studio when we performed live. That said, that dj does play decent stuff sometimes.

There's one DJ whose music I like but whose patter I find wearisome. (Patter-some?) Took me a while to figure that I just needed to spin the dial.

@βrian well I went to U of Michigan for my MBA part time evenings and weekends while working full time, commuting from home, late 90's ... so since I never lived there maybe why that's why I didn't listen to any local Ann Arbor radio.

@NGH: I usually avoid seeming meat equivalents, but I've heard that some veggie chorizo (or whatever on wants to call it) can be really good. Any advice?

I heard some weird shit in the woods the other night. Something was murdering something else. Maybe it was a Dire Wolf.

We've been hearing owls in the pre-dawn hours. City living.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am

Brian, we have a very noisy pre-dawn owl. It's been a while. The hawks had pushed deep into owl turf here in recent years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am

Whenever we hear owls, the pitbull doesn't seem to notice, but the chihuahua very quickly hides under a chair.

Do they compete? We seem to have both. Seems like they just tip their hats in passing as they change shifts.

I saw salmon swimming upstream and spawning for the first time in my life. I grew up in a town that had a sizeable river with fishladders but never went to see the salmon run. I loved seeing that.

TDK: when I was 13 (1974) my IrishCountry parents shipped me to SF from Bklyn(to get me away from my Marijuana smoking friends) to a crazy bachelor uncle living in an SRO above a tuxedo rental shop with a blinking Neon sign on Mission and 26th street.. That was a trip - I only did acid 3 times but that was a trip !!!!!!!! SF sound forever!!!!

@βrian: Trader Joe's veggie chorizo is better then the real thing. otherwise, I usually take firm tofu, marinate it for a few days, and then dry fry it, At that point, it isn't a meat equivalent, but the Japanese version. But, if you add veggie chicken broth to it works well (dry fried tofu can get rather tough enough).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am
Uncle Michael:

maybe competition isn't what it is. We had owls out the wazoo for years...then we had hawks, but no owls. Owls are crepuscular hunters and hawks are diurnal. I'm not sure how much their prey really overlaps. Or how willing they are to nest or roost near each other.

There's an owl across the street. Hawks aren't that uncommon around here.
