The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Serious question; With the wonders of the internet and WFMU's archives I can listen to Big Planet Noise anytime I want (not just Monday nights). Where are shows #1-#80???
Avatar 8:09pm
bigplanetnoise:

Smoketown, 1-80 were done for a local station here in Nashville, where... two things... we trying to find ourselves and - simultaneously - not really being allowed to BE ourselves. But - it was a good launchpad!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
Senor Headache:

Yeah, I've interviewed Peter Kraemer a few times for an article and then talked to all of the surviving members a few years ago while working on the liner notes for the proposed re-issue of their two LPs, but that project was scrapped, unfortunately.
Avatar 9:02pm

One of our faves, Matt! But - why the sheep???

So I see! I wouldn't mind a taste test!

Uncle Michael:

Nice mix on the playlist of what I think of as AM psyche and FM psyche.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm
Senor Headache:

The re-issue of their debut LP was going to have an extra CD of demos and live tracks. There was a particular hot version of them covering "Straight Shooter" from a late '66 show at the Matrix.
Avatar 9:05pm
bigplanetnoise:

Tim - Rascals were another band where I loved most b-sides as much as the A-side...
Avatar 9:06pm
bigplanetnoise:

Thank you, Uncle Mike! Love to hear that!
Avatar 9:06pm
bigplanetnoise:

Well, Senor - we've got to get on that disc. Does the band have the material? Let's do it!
Avatar 9:08pm
Andy R:

Is this the same Howard Roberts of the album 'HR is a dirty guitar player?"
Avatar 9:08pm

It sure is, Andy. He swung into this wacky psych-jazz world on two of his later Capitol LPs.
Avatar 9:09pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm

As far as I know, the only thing left to finish for the Sopwith Camel re-issue before the plug was pulled was final artwork and mastering. I can make some inquiries as to what they intend to do with all of that now, if anything.
Avatar 9:18pm

For sure, Senor - we'll get emails going after the show. Perfect.
