i did have what was to be a year-round garden here a few years ago, at the community garden. they have an unnecessary rule against gardening in the winter + i failed around late december. i'd made a minimal frame and laid clear plastic sheeting over it; rolled the plastic back every day. i still had plenty of parsely, spinach, kale, lettuce, collards, etc but was working/ using a darkroom in nj and one week i was down there and got offered extra work so i stayed. that would've been okay but it snowed, which mushed everything down; then it warmed up and steamed everything!

Happy/depressing, heaven/hell... yin/yang? Don't you need the darkness in order to be able to see light? Or is heaven a place where you can always see and remember the darkness in the distance but remain in light forever? Is that even possible? Is heaven where you become a happy, well-watered houseplant?

Eek, i wouldn't (& didn't) say i'd want everything to go my way always. i'm personally pro-risk & pro-occasional tragedy - if you will believe that. but if you were always happy then you'd always be happy. you wouldn't care about the yin/yang dynamic.
if heaven was boring then it wouldn't be heaven. if hell was fun it wouldn't be hell.

...in other words, yes you do need the dark to have the light. it is impossible to be happy all the time. you could conceivably be comfortable all the time; or "content", but that's not happiness.

(but for the record i don't believe in "heaven" and "hell", as afterlife situations)

Has anyone at the station ever done an informal study to see what so-called commercial musical acts have NOT been played once, EVER, by a single dj on WFMU? Like Hootie and the Blowfish or Don Henley ... etc. (I haven't checked these BTW.) I think that would make a fascinating list.

hmmm the accumulative malaise of "fineness" can be a kind of resistance to the flux of the human tendency to swim around in a spectrum of being, to require longing and fantasy. Sometimes an "okay" thing can become terrible if one isn't honest with the dreams that are kept at bay by resisting to soar off into a heaven on earth, the risk of course is the crash to the other side of whatever spectrum is calling. the roller coaster! thats it! the wave, the rhythm, the music, the dance! hmmm im almost off work and am anticipating catching to bus in the freezing cold, should i get take out or make a burrito with whats in the fridge?i wonder

@steveo & @Ven, that only tells you 99% of what's played on the station. The 1% that screws it up is Jones & X-Ray, who don't keep playlists and ironically are perhaps also the most likely to have played Hootie and the Blowfish, or at least something equally wretched. Is Hootie the yang? Do we need Hootie, and/or Don Felder, be able to appreciate real music?

OTOH Jones & X-Ray haven't really done so much of the "intentionally terrible music" thing since the 90s or maybe early 00s, back when they used to be more blatantly macho and talked about pro wrestling and played Tone Loc and popular music a lot. (Also Stan didn't keep playlists until a certain point but I'm sure he never played "terrible" music.)

I just got curious after hearing another dj ponder the same question with a specific group in mind. It's all good to me!

Bill Kelly doesn't run a playlist either, and last i knew Stan still didn't, but someone else fills it in afterward. they just want to do radio. i respect that.

Also, some of those Don Henley plays are "backwards" "remixes" which is definitely a good thing.
