My bluetooth/mobile phone connection has a 5 minute lag behind the desktop's stream, started an hour ago. I'm pretty sure it's the internet here. No cut outs.

I just got back from a cold weekend in Burlington VT and the hotel smoke detector had that same bag treatment when I walked in!

In Brooklyn, my smoke detector went off every time I cooked (would detach the battery). At least here, it's dual-one b/tn the living room and the bedroom wall, and hasn't gone off while cooking.

About 10 years ago: heating tostada shells in the toaster oven at work. Called to front counter to deal with customers, I leave shells in, but turn oven OFF. While I'm up front, alarm goes off, fire department comes...I assume it's all about an alarm miscue or inadvertent set-off in a production going on in the studio space further back in the building. Then found out it was my tostadas, suddenly afire, that caused alarms to go and the boss to grab the toaster oven and rush it out a loading door to the driveway. Surprise to me that it was incendiary tostada event. I was like, "Well, what the hell is up with that alarm, wonder what's going on back there..."

@chresti I did that with a really nice green enamel kettle, it was sad. Now I only use kettles with whistles. The one I have now has a really powerful one, the sound only gets worse as I ignore it. Just what I need.

@chresti, me too. I finally decided I had to spring for one of the electric ones that switches off at certain temps. It's got a 180° F setting so I can get the right temp for green tea and never burn anything. Plus it's glass so I can watch the water boil. Exciting times in Ikeville!

My parents' don't understand why I use a kettle compared to using the microwave to heat water for tea/etc. W/ the kettle, I know to turn it off, and wait 5-7 minutes, and I know it will be the appropriate temp (time varies according to tea/mate)

For me, the whistling ones always stop whistling after a year or two, and/or if I forget to check and make sure the whistle element is firmly pushed down, and I always forget. What good is that? Feh!

My Kitchen-Aid kettle is still whistling obnoxiously after several years. If it's at peak-heat and I jostle it while picking it up it emits a higher pitch sound like a cat who's tail has just been stepped on.

Okay, I must contribute: As a child, I had one of the first bendable Gumby figures. These early models were made from a soft eraser like plastic. A common system failure with these, were the wire armature inside the arms ended at the wrists. After a while, the wire would poke out just above the hands. one morning before I went to school, I got a brilliant idea how to fix this problem. I had a green pencil eraser shaped like a cube of butter. Since it had the same shape, logic told me it would melt like butter, then I could pour it into the holes in Gumby's arms. I got a sauce pan out of the cabinet under the stove top and dropped in the eraser and put it on a high flame. In about one minute it turned black and started to bubble. Realizing my project wasn't going to work as planned, I turned off the burner and went to school. The saucepan was waiting for when I got home. My mother was on the other side of the house and started smelling the acrid smoke. She said it took all day to get the stink out of the house.

hahaha! Franco i definitely did things like that, with plastic, rubber, everything - though not with my gumby, which also had bones sticking out. i think by then i'd already discovered that about plastic/rubber, having stunk up the house on a different occasion.

There should be a term for melting little plastic soldiers and, while they're on fire, holding them up so the dripping plastic does the "Fzoot fzewt fuzeeeoot" thing. A ritual practiced by many.

When I was at summer camp we experimented with hairspray and matches. Spraying it on the mirror and then lighting it=flaming mirror! Grateful that things never got out of control.

When you were in the fourth grade in California, it's all about the lore and history of the state. The mission system and it's cottage industries occupies a lot of space. This led my sister and myself to try and make candles from tallow, just like the Jesuits. Since we didn't have any freshly rendered fat, we uses butter and pipe cleaners. This smelled really horrible and made a lot of smoke. My mother was furious, and asked us what the hell was wrong with us, We whined in unison "We're been monks!"

Burning buttered pipe cleaners and lighting a mirror on fire sound like steps in a ritual to summon or evict a witch. Don't EVER do those things while heating water in a pan! Could conjure a whole 'nother premium demon! Or could conjure almond cookies to go with your tea. Results vary.

my brother once made a cross out of hardwood and nailed a gi joe to it. he'd even engraved "inri" on a little piece of metal and nailed that to the cross. then he stuck it in the ground. since it wasn't going to rot or even die he decided to burn it.
that was a lot of very smelly smoke.

since i deviated i'll share this one, along the lines of flaming mirrors. my brother put a nearly full can of green spray paint in a trash can + lots of newspaper + fire. that was pretty fantastic!
-and i'd bet some of the neighbors wondered where the dots of green paint came from.
