Shazam is real bad about identifying this kind of stuff. I've definitely pulled up some wildly incorrect results before.
Avatar 12:52am

Why am I killing myself on the playlist accuracy if you guys are using Sahazam?!
  12:52am

I always feel a little proud when Shazam gets it wrong.
Avatar 12:53am

Omg. We need this playlist. Shazam sucks. Sometimes it's a quick way to get a song in my library but I live for these playlists. Thanks so much.

*LaJoie rather...yeah, this album is so good. Such a dope synthesis of like every great guitar style.

Don't usually shazam your shows Jeff because the playlist is pretty spot on. But for this kind of music it's not great at detecting...

And hey, I saw the Dead in 1986 or so, so do I get some points for that?
  1:15am
Jeff Conklin:

That explains why you hate them, Adam :(
  1:15am
Scuttle:

Im loving this- used to see DSO w/ my Dad as a kid... Its been awhile!!

Jeff Conklin:

@Scuttle: I mean this in the nicest way possible but are you a teenager?
  1:17am
Jtrain7988:

Thanks man, can you play any Dykeritz? from portland, or songwriter saw him live, best songs! thanks
Avatar 1:19am
Jeff Conklin:

@jtrain7988: Of course, I will. I'll turn this off and get right to it
Avatar 1:19am
Eiderdown:

Jeff: ha, no hate for GD, only mildly annoyed at times. The show was in Minneapolis with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and the sound was pretty terrible, esp for the Dead for whatever reason
  1:20am
Scuttle:

Haha you’re a good guy, I’ll be in my 30’s soon..!
Avatar 1:21am
Eiderdown:

And Jeff, you are one of the esteemed few who can be my Dead selector any time, my friend
Avatar 1:21am
gregorianpants:

Went with the whole family to see Hornsby and the noisemakers at the Biltmore outside Asheville probably nearly 15(?) years ago now. Quite good. He rocked the obligatory hits "Way It Is" and "Mandolin Rain" seguing into "Black Muddy River". Don't remember much else from that other than a bunch of bats flying out of one of the old estate buildings right as the sun set and putting on a little show a few hundred feet up, very cool sight
Avatar 1:21am
Jeff Conklin:

Right on, Scuttle! Not throwing shade just never heard anyone say theyre folks took them to DSO. Very cool....
Avatar 1:24am
Jeff Conklin:

I've been on a deep post-Brent kick with the Hornsby era and I gotta say there's so much good playing here in this zone...

yo i am not able to tune in rn but i am so pumped to drink coffee and fry eggs to this set and plan my whole morning around this.

Kelly Jones:

That excellent first set lulled me into a quiet calm and I'm just now realizing that I've been listening to the Grateful Dead, who I must admit are playing in my personal after life hell. But in this context, I'm handling it well LOL. Good show Jeff. Enjoying it very much.
Avatar 1:33am

@Kelly: That's been my MO for years, sneak it in and eventually you're ONE OF US
Avatar 1:35am

Good morning from Hayastan. Just got to my desk. Looking forward as every Monday to this set, once the obligatory Dead marathon concludes, hehe, sorry))
Avatar 1:38am
Jeff Conklin:

Thanks for the information, Diezel.
  1:41am
Scuttle:

Gotta say for all who knock the Dead..
It was a pretty seamless transition for me from jammier stuff to Kraut to jazz etc..
They’re a perfect bridging band, super formative
  1:43am
yips:

all the world is a narrow bridge
Avatar 1:43am
Jeff Conklin:

GD haters are an extreme minority here. What I don't understand is why tune in to this show and login to complain about it?
  1:45am
Jeff Conklin:

Not talking about Kelly, she’s been hoodwinked and is liking it :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am
Kelly Jones:

I honestly CAN NOT believe I am listening to this... AND LIKING IT! Now I have to find a new band to play in my 7th ring of hell. That's WFMU for ya. I once bought a Elton John LP at the Spring Record Fair because the late, great William Berger opened with Burn Down the Mission and it literally changed my life. Don't tell ANYONE my shame-y music secrets!
  1:49am
Jeff Conklin:

Wm loved the Dead ;)
Avatar 1:50am
gregorianpants:

tho much of the hate comes from the 80s era "Touch" fanbase, or rather the most prominent ones: east coast yuppie Ivy leaguers pretending to be hippies or literal burnouts. The most irritating parts of the Dead fandom are the source of most of the hate. Many a punk rocker or hipster record store clerk have shat on them just to seem cool and be a contrarian to the dinosaur stadium rock behemoth that was the final years of the Dead (in many people's eyes).
Avatar 1:52am
Jeff Conklin:

@gregorian: that's true but that shit IS OVER. the music can now be presented without any of those bullshit trappings imho
Avatar 1:55am
gregorianpants:

Agreed, but it is the nature of people to be stubborn. Particularly the snobbish among us. I myself am guilty of that.

So it goes...
  1:56am
rw:

What do we think of the keyboards on this? Seems cool sometimes and goofy at others to me. I don't know shit about GD. Mostly just what I hear on this show.
Avatar 1:57am
gregorianpants:

Very uh... of its time
Avatar 2:00am
gregorianpants:

The sonics of many 80s and 90s shows have been a bit of a deterrance to me. I like cheesy MIDI and I like the Dead, but it's a bit chocolate on salmon for me at times. Good things on their own that don't always work well together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02am
Tommy in Neversink:

I saw the Dead at the Greensboro NC collusion in the late 70s..I'm from that area
Avatar 2:05am
Sean d:

My complaint about that dead set is that I didn't fall asleep
Avatar 2:07am
Jeff Conklin:

The keyboards make me wince sometimes I'll admit
  2:08am

sorry not sorry
  2:09am

also off topic but anyone gonna see ryley walker's union pool residency shows next month?

When you wince that's the time to turn it up!
Avatar 2:12am

Those Ryley shows are gonna be sick. Everyone should go.
  2:13am
rw:

This does sound good. JC are you playing the record or streaming the file?
Avatar 2:14am
Jeff Conklin:

That was the file but I promise I'm not lying...
Avatar 2:15am
Eiderdown:

That Winslow was fantastic, just grabbed the digital
Avatar 2:19am
gregorianpants:

Ryley's band was tight last tour. Like a jammier Tortoise or some other 90s Chicago post-rock outfit.
And that banter...
Avatar 2:22am
Jeff Conklin:

Nice, Adam!

@gregorian: Yeah, that last tour may have been his best. Always looking forward to whats next with him...
Avatar 2:24am
Eiderdown:

Okay, now I really do need to go to bed. Thanks so much Jeff for the fantastic tunes. I'll catch the rest in the archive. Goodnight/morning all!
Avatar 2:25am
Diezel Tea:

About GD, I wasn't complaining, just making a joke. They're personally not my cup of tea, but the bulk of this show is right up my alley. Can only speak for myself regarding comments here. If anything, be happy that people are staying tuned in even through passages that don't resonate with them, homie))
Avatar 2:26am
