The only oldies near NYC off the top of my head is low power 107.9 out of Woodbridge. Also 103.3 HD 3 if you have an HD radio in the car.

That's true, Michael -- I was just googling and their format, called "classic hits," is considered the successor to "oldies" -- mid-70s to mid-90s but a real focus on the MTV-era 80s. I've only heard them break format once, when Aretha Franklin died they dipped into the 60s instead of Who's Zoomin Who?

WCBS is a joke now....every time I turn it on I hear some synth-heavy 80s track, like Whitesnake or Def Leppard, or disco. You'd think they could throw in a '60s track once in awhile (unless there's a special show devoted to that at another time). Another once--great station ruined by the money & marketing zombies.

Commercial radio isn't about music aesthetics or curation. It's about assembling a certain structure of audience for advertisers. Per ad industry thinking, people 55 and up tend either to have what they want already, or else have strong brand/product loyalties that are tough to change with an ad. So oldies radio format keeps moving forward to go no further than 40 years back, to hit songs that people 55 and under remember being new hits.

Takes more $ to convince 55 and older to buy than <55, so advertisers go for younger people since it's cheaper to reach them. Hence, no 60s and little to no 70s songs anymore.

@Hoboken jack re oldies radio. I agree. But I miss the one I used to listen to with my dad growing up. Maybe it’s the same station, but they updated the oldies to be 708090:( instead of 60504030s??

@Tommy: I know someone who was on comnetcial radio station focus groups for awhile. She said they'd play 5 to 10 seconds of a song and ask people to vote if they'd want to hear the whole song, or whether they would tend to switch stations and keep looking. It's pretty hardcore.
