The background album looks like Pete Townshend's Scoop, but it's not I fear.

Or possibly "Another Scoop"

Ken removed (or they decided to take a break) many of my fave shows, lots of the late night stuff got shifted which is my early-day/afternoon for now, but I will give all the new shows/ones I've not listened to before a fair shot

  1:11pm
TUBELLOR BELTS:

There was no mention on the last Avant Show of retiring/break and I know about 6 months ago Ken tried to reduce the show to 2 hours (against the will of the show's host).
Must say I didn't rate to Double Dip which replaced one of my favourite Saturday morning shows or when Diane Kamikaze was removed from the schedule.

If he would only replace like for like , you know I like to hear heavy metal every once in a while, but DK sow was not replaced with another heavy metal show.

Forgot to mention: Mark Murrell (aka Special Ed/Ed Special) was also in the Crimson-ish prog band Inserts: www.discogs.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm
Cmurtha:

I mean, I can see the appeal of not going like for like, since it breaks up the kind of music being heard. Though I agree that, at least in the time slots I am hearing there is a bit of a dearth in certain genres, but there are more than acouple of shows in the time slots I am hearing are similarly thematically and sonically even if they play different stuff. Nothing against those shows either, I love them, but I don't see the logic of having 3 shows that do ambient/soft-pop beyond that is what the liseners want? I am sure Ken knows why he does what he does

You've probably all heard this before, but is really is true: Every DJ gets temporarily taken off the schedule sooner or later, and when that happens, it in no way means they won't be back ... it just means a certain amount of shuffling around is necessary in order to be able to try out new shows from time to time.

I also don't "get" the scheduling on the alt streams, I always felt like they could be a bit more "packed" , but I imagine screening folks/figuring out those logistics is a lot more work than I think it is. I do hear that tony, like I said, despite loosing some shows I like I'm not upset or mad, just voicing some thoughts.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Rich in Washington:

The WFMU alternative streams are a bit sporadic, based on DJ's weird personal schedules (mine's no exception). We're also spread around the globe, in different time zones, which is why right now there are big gaps in programming blocks.
I remember a time when there were very few live shows on this very stream, but now it's jam packed with wondrous shows.
We're hoping to achieve that with the Sheena's Jungle Room stream eventually.

'GTDR" , "SJR" and "RnSI" all offer wonderful shows in addition WFMU's main stream. It sometimes gets a bit overwhelming for me with so many excellent shows and so few hours in a day. That's not a criticism, it's a compliment. Great show tonight (UK time).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm

I know what you mean, Dave!
It's getting harder and harder to catch everyone's shows, especially when there are great shows which unfortunately conflict with one another across the three streams.
and sometimes, the schedule change giveth and the schedule change taketh away...

Dave In St Alban's UK:

Bummer on the new schedule. Let's hear what the new shows have to offer? Lost a few favourites though ..... :-(

The cover's pretty fancy too. The title is painted directly on the shell and there's a piece of mesh underneath the shell and on top of the J-card.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm

Tony Coulter was himself a new FMU DJ once, and presumably occupied someone's previous-schedule air slot. And goodness, WFMU is inconceivable sans Tony!

In Doug we trust!
  2:14pm
TUBELLOR BELTS:

ITS TRUE no one can go on forever, I mean Diane Kamikaze must have been 30 years on WFMU.
Ken may have felt, well look what she plays is old hat, NWBHM, HAIR METAL, PUNK ROCK, THRASH, AND DOOM METAL.
But she had the knack of playing good stuff.
You might say that Walter Burger, bless his soul, before he died, was way ahead of Diane, and could include all kinds of dark stuff, gloom and doom, and experimental noise rock in his playlists. Those two djs have not been replaced and certainly to hear show of full of children's records, funky soft pop and or gurgling throat singers from outer Mongolia doesn't do it for me!
Avatar 2:15pm
Tony Coulter:

This is obvious, I guess, but: The David Cason tape on now is the one with the wallpaper-ish cover on the lower left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Webhamster Henry:

The streams - and podcasts if you haven't discovered them - make it possible for more fresh WFMU, and if you hit the archives, you can relive the glory days of 2004 or whatever almost in their entirety.
I'd like to make a new kind of WFMU app (a webapp probably) that would let you build your own schedule out of the live streams and archives and podcasts. A kind of WFMU Build-A-Bear. There is a vast amount of material, and since much of it was already old when it was played, timeless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
Rich in Washington:

I DO miss hearing Doom, Metal, and hard rock on WFMU. Her show being taken off came right on the heels of Wm. Berger's unfortunate passing.
Avatar 2:16pm
Tony Coulter:

I would bet big money on Diane coming back next schedule -- no need to fear there, I don't think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Rich in Washington:

That would be cool Webhamster Henry! I would certainly make use of something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Rich in Washington:

The official APP, which I use quite a bit, is a little long in the tooth. I also used the unofficial app, but for some reason it no longer works properly on my phone.
  2:19pm
spodiodi:

sounds like a fun challenge and a useful app, Webmaster Henry
  2:21pm
TUBELLOR BELTS:

Also think should be a free slot for guest djs, something new every week. How about the bands that perform live on WFMU be given a slot to play their favourite records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Webhamster Henry:

WFMU is a world wide phenomenon, so you could timeshift the schedule and fill in holes with archives. The comment boards are generally left open! so in theory , a community using the build-a-wfmu app could keep commenting and connecting.
  2:21pm
spodiodi:

the WFMU app makes roadtrips a delight

@TubellorBells: there used to be unfilled slots long ago that were filled with tryouts and rotating hosts.

This David Cason hits a few nice bases, Soft Machine, Beefheart, Muffins etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm

The whole WFMU internet presence has not been reevaluated for a while. There are features I'd like to add, but my WebHamster title is largely ceremonial at this time.
  2:34pm
TUBELLOR BELTS:

Webham does that mean you are not employed by WFMU ,in a nice cushy position as new program advisor?
  2:37pm
TUBELLOR BELTS:

As you look around the "dial", many internet radio stations, such as Dublab, have shitty dance music shows for the majority of the day! The rock, psyche and experimental shows are in the decline there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Rich in Washington:

I keep trying to get the Sheena's Jungle Room stream listed on TuneIn, but it's seemingly impossible. I remember that users used to be able to submit streams and they'd eventually get listed. I am guessing that they were bombarded with requests from every bedroom DJ/hobby programmer, etc.
  2:45pm
TUBELLOR BELTS:

Sheena's Jungle Room - I think I heard it last night - a British DJ, playing lots of obscure 60s psyche pop from old comps!
