There is an earlier reference in 1857 in a glossary of golfing terms. Its origin is almost certainly earlier and bound up with that of the word Caddie.    2:54:14 (Pop-up)

What-ho David. Sunny morning here so far but rain has been doggng us.
Looking to get the well in the garden working, it drops at least 15 metres, has a motor driving a pump. Lovely old piece of machinery. Should be a challenge to get it going.
We were up at Pole Bank the other day, I thought of you.

Good morning everyone

David in London:

Brian, I'm back at my mother's place near Oxford at the moment, and it's swung wildly between thundering rain and hot sunshine. Your own well? That's very cool indeed. Is the pump an old piece of kit, or something more modern? I might be scheduling another trip to Pole Bank at some stage this summer, so I will keep you posted if that pint in the Three Tuns still stands.

brian - house i grew up in had a pump at the top of the well head driven by an electric motor - patenet date was about 1915. it drove a piston that pulled a series of oak rods fitted together with a leather piece at the end that made the pump seal and vacuum - it was essentially an electric handpump but it always worked.. someone convinced my mother to replace it with a new in ground pump and i have the old pump in my shed as a keepsake.

dale, sounds similar but a bit more modern. The tube drawing the water up is significant. Where we live was the orchard for the farmhouse next door, so the well supplied water from a holding tank further up the hill. Then when the water company put in a deep borehole for the village it became redundant. We are still obliged to supply water if needed. Really want it to help water the garden.
