EFD, I assume you saw that UMG filed to have that class action suit dismissed?
Avatar 9:18pm

It was kind of a cheap way to get a hit record back then but everybody did it...just write a song with a popular name in it

Tubes just seemed to disappear, played that stuff a lot in high school.

I was never a huge Tubes fan... until I saw them live a few years ago. They give great show! Saw them again recently and probably will again.

That really is a drag..!.. so that should make copies of records cut from the original stampers even more valuable???

JakeGould:

Neglect in the art world—which includes publishing and music—neglect of the past is very common. FWIW, people hate CDs and digital streaming, but honestly many items would sit stagnant and decay if not handled for reissues and such.

Anyway… This is a great interview!
Avatar 9:47pm
JIMD2019:

this is interesting .. esp the concept of hard drives being obsolete :-(
  9:48pm

Oooch Tim Hardin kinda casually took a little hit there...
Avatar 9:48pm
Mailman Tom:

Saw Canned Heat at the Fillmore East before they played Woodstock. They were terrific!
  9:49pm
JakeGould:

@JIMD2019: The best way to store data on hard drives is to copy data to multiple drives and store them in different locations.

Or if you have the resources, a RAID array is the best way to go. And that said, good luck getting a budget to do either in many places.
Avatar 9:51pm
JIMD2019:

Thanks man! I’ll lookup the raid thing. my teacher was like “if it doesn’t exist in 4 places, it doesn’t exist” luckily I haven’t started backups of anything important yet

Have a case of slightly warped LPs of first band was in. Stored in a cold moist basement. Not worth listening to but they're safe.

EFD/Andy -- I have one platinum record from my days in the early 1990s as an MD at an active rock station. The fact that it's for Candlebox doesn't make me want to leave it far behind.

How were so many so great at Woodstock? It’s like there was a groove throughout. Or I could be high.

Henry Vestine left Canned Heat before Woodstock. Harvey Mandel replaced him in the Woodstock lineup

What I got from the NY Times article was that the industry didn't have the chance / foresight to use today's technology to remaster the lost master tapes due to the fire.
  10:04pm
JakeGould:

@Ciggy: The industry is notoriously cheap. Not just music but pretty much all industries. They are focused on pushing out current product and archives and “ephemera” are just that.

Nobody at the top of any of the major record labels cares about how to deal with old merch past tossing them in a warehouse somewhere.

So Universal acquires several other labels thru takeovers over a great period - & allows these priceless irreplaceable works to be destroyed
- but also covers it up - & continues to obscure the facts about what's lost when clarity is most needed...

What about the 2nd stage at Woodstock? Many performers played under that tent, including Tiny Tim.

I’ve seen the Tubes at least 20 times. They are a big NorCal band who are on every multi bill in town. You live here, you’re gonna see ‘em.

I missed most of the conversation, so forgive me if this question has been covered: out of all the music festivals that took place from, say, 1967 to 1972, why did Woodstock get so much acclaim that it became synonymous with hippiedom and the “youth movement”? Was it the movie, or the Joni Mitchell song, or something else?
