@Doc: There was a huge scene of groups that went for that sound specifically, I can't think of all the names of guys I like right now but another one I like a lot is Admiral Dele Abiodun, who has some King Sunny-sounding records but also represents the turn in Juju music towards incorporating keyboards and synths into the same song structure

i listened to part of the archive of the "call of the jungle, kick of the gong" episode earlier and "the penguin" by Raymond Scott got me thinking about the first way i heard it which was as a sample within a soul coughing song.
now i need to revisit my soul coughing albums, as well as listen to that entire episode on a real stereo, once i get home on saturday.

i saw them live before i really knew their material and they were excellent; but it was a bill with a weird mishmosh...blur; bush; Joan Osbourne; 4-5 others. i don't think the label knew how to market them.
