"exotica" records, meant to say, ha ha. Supposedly, hearing the birds tweating in the background inspired their use.

The Korla Pandit show aired on Portland TV back in the day. I remember my mom once waxing nostalgic about early, often live, TV and she described his show, although couldn't recall his name. Just some guy in a turban playing the organ and making eyes at all the housewives watching it.

Nope - my parents' copy of "Joy Of Sex" was definitely not a display copy. <shudder>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm

@Mr Fab - exactly! I think that's why I love it so much. It's just so ... random :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm

Reading Kon-Tiki was a passage, slightly akin to Tropic of Cancer or Junkie & Naked Lunch. The books to dig into.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm

Wow - Tropic of Cancer. My parents' slightly more sophisticated friends had a copy of that. ;-)

Avatar 6:41pm
Linda Lee:

not for us to say really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Granny - good point. What I was stumbling to say was that I think it comes from an admiring place. It's not meant to poke fun or incite hatred. Completely the opposite.
  6:42pm
Rob:

People understandably have a problem with the word "exotic" I do not think that the music that is called Exotica is racist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rob - another excellent point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's like my mum putting pineapple in the dish and calling it "Polynesian". It always was because she thought it was interesting and something different and enjoyable. It came from a good place.
Avatar 6:46pm
Linda Lee:

I'm wondering how much cultural appropriation actually took place ~ or if exotica isn't more akin to jazz than anything else. you don't really say someone like Gerry Mulligan, say. is dong cultural appropriation..
Avatar 6:46pm
Linda Lee:

it's just an evolving hybrid form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@LL - I think that Exotica really is just such a mish-mash that it's a thing in and of itself in the end.
Avatar 6:47pm
Linda Lee:

that's what I'm thinking too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Jesus - I just typed in the next record and it suggested "UK Disco Mix". When you see what it is ... lol
Avatar 6:47pm

& in another sense, all music is cultural appropriation.

DJ GeorgyGirl:

And *now* ... I have to find the "UK Disco Mix" ;-)

To try and emulate something that strikes you as far out and groovy is simply a compliment.. whether you make money off of it or not???

.. but it's such a common language that the term loses meaning..

maybe it's really about acknowledgement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm

Great show. Love Exotica and no, it's not racist. It could be presented in a racist way, demeaning the culture it drew on but by and large it isn't, unlike, for instance The Black and White Minstrel Show. It could be accused of being a bit expoitative but it shows respect to the source influences. As for 'cultural appropriation'? Yeah, we should all stick to our own cultures and not allow any others to be influenced by them. NEVER!
