This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Coulda been a little tiny Holi Festival Kit of powders, too, though that'd be more likely these days when the Holi-influenced clouds and whacks and eruptions of color are showing up everywhars.

You never know how something routine, such as those organ licks of Greensleeves, might hit the heightened mind condition. When we were tripping on something or other outside someone's lakeside cottage one evening 40-something years ago, a fella, who maybe wasn't tripping, suddenly had a trumpet, stood ramrod straight and earnestly and assertively played the theme from the Godfather. We were uproariously responsive to these unexpected stimulus.

Hi Rev! Hi Granny!

CC:

I remember sitting around and groovy parties with people who were all mellow and relaxed and making out and everything and then all of a sudden some guy with stand up and he would act like he was pulling a sword out and go shlang and then another guy would stand up and would go shling..!.. and they would have an imaginary sword fight and wake everybody up!!!

Okay, everybody knows about the Spirit/Led Zepplin kerfuffle, but did you know they also 'borrowed' from the British folk singer Anne Briggs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Little Danny:

Love this Harumi so much.

Instrumentation just made me flash on Ariel Kalma
  9:22pm
CC:

ok... so that must be a extemporaneously at your desire???
Avatar 9:23pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: totally, it's a really unusual piece! very exotic and new age - the flipside is a more conventional psych groove, but with Harumi's parents speaking for 25 minutes in Japanese. what a special record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
coelacanth∅:

it's called stealing, and they stole from many people
being influenced by or even using a song or melody is fine; but i don't think it's fine when they take full writing credit for it, when they know they didn't write it.

(but -was it Anne Briggs or was it Bert Jansch [?] -or both?)
Avatar 9:28pm
Flash Strap:

being critical of them requires articulating that they are actually abusing IP law by employing it in a ruthless way - not that they are being cool scofflaws, which is in fact cool. if they were cool they would record what they want and just not claim it as their IP. i know there are problems with that position, but it is mine

not sure i have a problem with that Evan! but in the case of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page -and the others i mentioned -they did give themselves full dredit for composing songs they obviously didn't write. it's greedy and selfish.

...there's one thing you can say positive about Clapton (and i'm not known for saying positive things about Clapton!) is that when he (same goes for Jack Bruce, the heart and brains behind cream) did someone else's song, and they did that a lot, they always gave credit where credit was due.
-even when the writer was long gone and there was no one to fight it.

I tend toward the other end of the spectrum. I think it's meaningless to claim authorship. So, when I refer to "Virginia Woolf," I mean those texts we attribute to her. I frankly don't care whether or not she wrote them.

I say, fuck John Locke!

And you can quote me. But please attribute properly.
