A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

There are a lot of old armories scattered through the city. That 26th St. one was a HQ after Sept. 11, as I recall. The Arsenal in Central Park is the Parks Dept. HQ where I go for a canoeing permit. I think there's a big one in Park Slope that has a YMCA in it now. Years ago I did some production work on a book that was a history of armories and strategies of control in London and NYC.

The results? “What came back confirmed their worst fear. They quickly had a positive test from a local teenager with no recent travel history. The coronavirus had already established itself on American soil without anybody realizing it.”

The thing that’s crazy personally? I had a bad “flu” around February 11th where I had a fever of 103.5F. Wondering now if that was really Coronavirus. Because damn, that was the worst upper respiratory infection I have had ever.

@John - Getting crazy! Seattle Public Schools are closed. Gov. Inslee declared "social distancing" and canceling of events with more than 250 people among other things. I live in the county across the Puget sound from Seattle so things are a bit more "wait and see". Through my work, residential care facilities are taking it very seriously and most have locked down.

Dear PJ, that is a good summary of the way things stand at present. I am being cautious and vigilant of my own health and limit my (mass) social gatherings somewhat, but what I'm seeing here is a spiteful attitude from folks who either think it's the harbinger of doom and not being taken seriously or those who would gladly lick stair rails at the bus station to show how glib and above it all they are. America has become a truly polarized place.

I went to a friend's place in late Jan., tearing myself away from Suzy Hotrod guest-hosting for Rex. We managed to pick it up on his kitchen radio while we played games. When his partner got home, she thought it was too staticky and put on the Spotify rockabilly channel instead. It got ... depressing. Just -- I'm not terribly well musically educated compared to a lot of folx around here. Every show is full of acts that are new to me (or that I have only heard on WFMU). That channel was song after song that I already knew and heard on FM radio and bar jukeboxes my whole life over and over.

@Malcolm, seriously!

I swear, it took me and Kate YEARS of hearing WFMU DJs tell us to listen online at WFMU.org before we were like, You know what? We might be able to hear this on the internet instead of on the world's most heroically struggling bathroom boombox!

It turns out, all those DJs were right. Though as I sit here and listen on the laptop with a high-density speaker from some arts org, the boombox is on the bathroom in case I have to go to that end of the apartment! Static and all! (better on cloudy days).

I think I created a WFMU account around 2011, years before I actually listened to it. It was because I was looking for stations that played zoviet france. I was so excited that I created an account but didn't take it further. In fact, I didn't actually start listening until last fall.
