Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am
WillCrete:

@SV: glad to be listening tonight. I'm tuning in from the southern edge of Chicagoland, the village of Crete, IL.
Digging the fretless bass playing on that Mother Gong tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am
McGroovey:

I thought this sounded like some kind of ?? Gong. There's too much ?? Gong to keep track of, and they're favorites of mine. Discogs says this was cassette-only, 1988? Never hoid of it. I do have the first two Mother Gong albums, but I have to draw lines when I reach a couple inches of a band's albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am

Doing my thing, sv. Living and breathing in these strange times. Great set. I was on the phone with my aunt...and rolling to the vibes. How are you holding out?

McGroovey:

The obvious Gongs to crack into are the Angel's Egg/Flying Teapot/You trilogy. Camembert Electrique is right before that, and similarly good. They're spacy, noodly-riff-rocking, and funny in turns. Also, the Planet Gong Floating Anarchy Live 1977 album, which adds a dose of punk (in the heavy riffing sense) anarchy to the spacy-rock-fun. Avoid the late '70s Gong albums without Daevid Allen, unless you like fusion. Most of those say "Pierre Moerlen's Gong" on the cover, but there are a couple that don't. They don't really rock or fly off into space, and they're not much fun. Unless you like fusion. One of them has Alan Holdsworth on it, which will either attract you or repel you, depending.

The Mother Gong records I have sound like the good Gong. There's also a New York Gong record (or more than one?) which is basically Daevid Allen with Material, and it's kinda crazy, not so much like Gong, but not so much like Material, either. But I like it. Kind of Lo-Fi almost-rocking studio poetry. And I have some Daevid Allen solo things that I like: "Bananamoon" (with Robert Wyatt, etc), "Divided Alien Playbax 80" (tape-experimental-music + poetry), "N'Existe Pas" (similar to early '70s Gong, with but minus most of the riffing, but with plenty of spaciness and goofy poetry). Oh, and there's a Daevid Allen & Kramer album from the nineties, but I can't rememebr what it sounds like.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

@McGroovey: thanks for the listening notes/ context on the Gong resonances/ legacies.
@Mr. Pumpy: agreed ... onward into the journey of figuring it out

sv, coming back in a bit. Oh... a bunch of the Steven Wilson stuff I mentioned recently is on the Tonefloat imprint. Fabio played a pre- Kraftwerk: The Organisation track called Tone Float a few days ago and I figure that may be where the label got it's name from. Makes sense judging on their location (Netherlands) and type of music. I had never heard The Organisation album, it''s amazing!

I often get annoyed when someone compares an artist to another artist. I have to say though, this bass line (well it kind of drifted off) reminds me so much of a slightly sped up Roni Size, Reprazent - Brown Paper Bag. In a weird and wonderful way.
