A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Trouble The latest "advice" is that if you can work from home you should, but if you can't you should go back to work, which means that scaffolders and builders are basically being forced to work in close proximity to each other, and poorer people who can't work from home, are being forced to take buses, trains and the Tube to get to work. That's only in England; Wales, Scotland and NI have, rightly, maintained the stricter distancing guidelines, but Scotland and Wales at least are not ruled by right-wing imbeciles. Basically, we're an island, a place that can be sealed off, and we've got the highest number of fatalities in Europe. We still aren't quarantining people who are flying in every day. It's ridiculous.

@Adrian...that's been the lay of the land for lowest income people throughout the entire Covid period. It's being referred to in global press as contemporary slavery. The health management crisis inherent in that points to world lunacy, while the bleak social reality of indentured wage slavery, alive and well, points to something that is worse than crazy, and far less healthy in the long run. At least we work to contain a virus. That we work to maintain the other thing is deeply disturbing.

Yeah, p20, it's a dilemma. "doing better' and 'getting ahead' seems, intrinsically, to mean that someone else has to be doing worse, and someone else has to be getting behind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am
Pale Son:

@p20 In theory that's true of any economy, even a capitalist one, whose advantages are quick distribution and motivation of production. Production of capital is not itself a non-circular reason for an economy. But that's easily forgotten when self-interest is the prime motivator and growth becomes all-important.

@p20...I can't agree that it's the only measure of success. Capitalism is THE world religion. It's everything, everywhere. Socialism, as I know it, is just a test department within it. Even science is subservient to it. And unless there is some cataclysm, capitalism will continue to evolve, and to define us. BUT, as with other religions, aside from pure orthodoxy, your place within it is determined by you alone. Individuals will and can negate, and therefore redefine, capitalism, hopefully for the good of ALL, but not necessarily. I expect, first, that its great success will ultimately implode, and that those with the most will pursue those with the least, almost cannibalistically, until they are themselves destroyed. Whatever pays will continue to rule. I don't like it, but I recognize it. It's horrifying. It's sublime.

@p20...I know Marx wrote about economics in this way. He was an economist, and his map of what he saw remains a compelling and cogent way of describing the workings of the modern world, which was for him a very new world. He was a long time ago. His views describe the late 19th century, but his idea of EXCHANGE/VALUE is exactly what exists today. Even when discussing art, the first thing that someone will say is,"How much did it cost?" when determining for themselves what it is worth. And a human being is converted to a measured amount of 'work-potential', i.e. there are no people. He was a prescient guy.

Everyone's description of capitalism is dead on.but I think a ultimate description would be to say that it's a pyramid scheme. as anyone knows its design so that the money flows up from the majority of people who are the poorest up to the peak to the robber barons. of who do not share the wealth, but horde it. in that way there will never be equal economic development for all.

I think of Capitalism as a less defined term, a murky and amorphous concept. 'One ring to bind them all.' A bit of very dangerous magic. It is defined as much by what one chooses to do with it. In that way it is a mirror.

@p20 I totally understand where you're coming from about capitalism and agree that the goal within it is purely self-interested. I just want to clarify my point earlier about circularity: I was merely saying that the goal of capital accumulation of capital can't count as a reason for an economic system, because that would be circular logic. What is the goal in Monopoly? To make everyone else broke, thereby winning the game. What is the reason for inventing Monopoly in the first place? To have fun. The reason for any economic system is to maximize quality of life for the people within it, but different systems have different ways of doing that, some less egalitarian than others. And capitalism, as you're pointing out and I agree, is based on some pretty unaltruistic principles.
