Wendy del Formaggio:

Slugluv, it's worth going to Carnival, though (except wait a few years, obviously). You can go early, like a few weeks before Mardi Gras, and stick with the smaller neighborhood parades, or even hit the bigger ones like Muses, and still have a good time. It's really just the Quarter that gets totally nutso on MGDay. But even that's a spectacle worth seeing, especially if you're lucky enough to catch St. Ann's as they arrive on Canal to see Zulu. It's a mind-blowing scene.

They moved to New Orleans after they formed there so confusing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
mariano:

Thanks slugluv - January to May's the time to be here, unless you like unbearable heat and humidity.

Wendy: Some of the smaller parades like Chewbacchus and Krewe du Vieux earlier in the season are among the best, a lot more intimate than the float parades. On MG though the two main parades, Zulu and Rex, run along St Charles uptown and onto Canal St, so a good portion of the city is pretty wild on the day itself (then there are the West Bank and Metairie parades). But yeah, the Quarter is unbelievably packed on the days leading up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

Yesterday I talked to an old girlfriend who lived in New Orleans. She introduced me to gumbo. I introduced her to PCP. She introduced me to putting peanuts in a bottle of Coke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Little Danny:

@Franco: so you two are even then, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Uncle Michael:

is coke with peanuts a good thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm

Roasted peanuts or boiled peanuts? I’m not familiar with either approach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm

For me the big draw is public urination.

You know Danny, we were young and in love....for a minute. But we still like to talk about all the trouble we could stir up. So yes, we're even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Thanks for the intel, Mariano. My info might be a little old, too. It's been awhile since I've been down for MG.
I can't remember if I saw Krewe du Vieux, but I do prize the Krewe du Jieux bumper sticker my friend sent me -- my friend who caught the bagel throw, mind you! The bumper sticker says, "New Orleans. Oy, such a home!" It always goes right on the fridge door as soon as I move into any new place.

Haha Wendy! Yeah, one of the marching groups in Krewe du Vieux (I think) is Krewe du Mishegas and they have some great swag, all very punny. One of their throws this year was a Notorious RBG sticker (RBG wearing shades in front of a US flag with stars of David).

Avatar 8:45pm
slugluv1313:

thanks, @ Wendy and @ mariano!
yeah, definitely wanna check out the INSANITY too, just wanna be kinda prepared :)
for real, friends have moved to NOLA since the 80s, or at least visited -- the "ex" went with a friend (who i think was helping his Dad move??) -- they got there before MG but stayed for the festivities -- i may still have some of those photos, including those from a cemetery that they later learned was in one of the most "dangerous" parts of New Orleans -- but not like they were looking for "tourist attractions" anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

You're welcome, Slugluv! About being prepared... I used to go with friends who were MG regulars. They are the people with the butterfly / shoe puppets that have marched with Muses and Orpheus. I asked them a bazillion questions before I went down with them. And still nothing prepared me for Carnival. It's a beautiful experience. At my 1st MG I drank a big cup of magic mushroom tea... and couldn't tell when it kicked in because shit was already so trippy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
mariano:

Wendy: I don't see why not, though of course you need to get the people, make costumes, make throws, etc. If you'll accept applications from goyim I'd be happy to march.

slugluv: St. Patrick's and Halloween are really good times to be here as well. St Paddy's is like a mini MG and Halloween, well, it's Halloween in NOLA.
Avatar 8:50pm
slugluv1313:

hahahaha yeah the "ex" and his pal were both astounded at the public puking, urination, 24-hour bars (this was in the 80s), and "drag queens" just hanging out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
ultradamno:

I didn't know that volkswagen bit people.
  8:52pm
BB:

There are still 24 hour bars in New Orleans. Quite a few.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
mariano:

Lots of 24/7 bars still (well, normally). My first awareness of drag queens was when I was a kid, seeing posters on Bourbon St for "the city's prettiest boys" with pictures that looked like something from the cover of "Some Girls." I found it all very perplexing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Mariano: Admittance to Krewe du Plotz is not contingent upon being of the Tribe. There are requirements, though. No anti-Semites, racists, bigots, misogynists, homophobes, transphobes, or cops.
