Dean:

Wow, david w.! I was thinking about "passion" for one reason or another I've now already forgotten during your show. It's neither overrated nor undervalued. It's overused. By marketeers professional and amateur. One must proclaim one's "passion" for [activity] or equate one's "passion" with [activity], as if to interject a note of irrationality to serve as evidence of one's boundless devotion to [activity]. For example, "Cooking is my passion" means something like, "Don't ask me for anything approaching my objective qualifications or experience as a chef, just note that I can't help myself from behaving like one." When, as so often occurs these days, people tout their "passion," I think of Handel's Messiah. I imagine Georg proclaiming, "Writing music is my passion!" He got that right.

I have a corrective for the reasonable observation that Pence looks unworldly and artificial. Take a look at, say, a $1 bill, that guy in the middle. Or a $5 bill, $100 bill... Who are these people?!

That suggests, Gary, that one should observe certain sartorial or cosmetic norms in 2020. I'm not sure I'd be on board with that, least of all nowadays as I melt into the sofa, unbathed, unshaven, hair uncut and uncombed. Pence seems to me to be just one example of many whose obsessive attention to appearance overshoots the mark. I mean, how many in Washington insist on wearing that stupid lapel pin? It's so tiny, yet so condescending and irritating. Outside D.C. few fall for the patriotism sham.

You know, I've always felt the Puritans got a bad rap, not that I can back up the gut feeling, except to note that Perry Miller's treatise on "the New England mind" is within my grasp right now, a fact that doesn't back it up at all. But what I find so disturbing about that Pence story is not that he might in fact genuinely believe or be committed to the stricture. It's that it seems so likely he's faking devotion, cynical.

Yes, and I also notice Glenn Greenwald's frequent mockery of our dysfunctional habit of referring to former, long out-of-office mayors/vice presidents/presidents/senators/cabinet members, etc., as the Honorable Senator So-and-So. It's a creepy convention. Respect is due, perhaps, to the office and the incumbent (and obviously that's a debatable proposition), but not necessarily to the former official, who is, last I checked, a mere human being, worthy of no more or less respect than anybody else.

Who does alcoholics better than the Russians? Oh, fun, a game! I'll start. The Mentors?

The best restaurant I've tried down there is Nargis. It's Uzbek but Russians love it. For a while there was a branch of it in Park Slope but it closed a year or so ago, even though it seemed like it had plenty of customers. It was gorgeous in a restrained way but didn't have that off-putting sort of Russian ostentatious quality that NGH referred to above. Bummer the Slope one is gone but the original still stands on Coney Island Ave.
