I'm sure you guys all know, but if not, Tim hosts the incredible Moroccan Tape Stash blog, where you can find some of the music we're playing tonight: moroccantapestash.blogspot.com

Franco Twinkie! And Mzzm, you snuck in there!

Love me some Lemchaheb. They were one of the first Moroccan groups I ever heard. Picked up this CD at Down Home in El Cerrito about 30 years ago: www.discogs.com...

I love the cover of that one! Tim, I just reread your Lemchaheb are not the Village Green post last night and was cracking up

I love this album, too, but I can't say the same for the one Dissidenten did with Jil Jilala. Do I need to back and relisten?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Franco Twinkie:

I love this record too! They were so out in front when this came out.
Avatar 7:33pm
tim abdellah:

I kind of like the Dissidenten/Jil Jilala one as well. Especially the first cut with the really crunchy guitar chords! It's been a while since I listened to it, though.

Tim, I am so beyond in love with this band, why are they third on the triumvirate rung, is it just b/c they were third to start up?
Avatar 7:49pm
LambdaCalculus:

I have to say too that this is a damn good band.
Avatar 7:49pm
tim abdellah:

I think that is part of the reason. They did get started after NG/JJ were already successful.

TDK60:

Hello Gary and Bodega Popstars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Gary:

TDK!
Avatar 7:54pm
tim abdellah:

Also, NG/JJ drew almost exclusively on Moroccan traditional musical sources (instruments and songs/genres). This was a huge deal because up to that point, modernity in Moroccan music was being sought on a Middle Eastern model - big string orchestras a la Umm Kulthum. So when Lemchaheb came out using non-Moroccan instruments like bouzouk, and non-Moroccan musical elements like vocal polyphony, it may have been seen as diluting the Moroccan modernity of NG/JJ with outside elements.
Avatar 7:56pm
tim abdellah:

But that's also one of the things that makes them so interesting, and their music sometimes more eclectic.
Avatar 7:57pm

This song is so cool - though I'm still sort of conflicted about the synthetic sounds. I mean why use a synth bass when you have the great guinbri player Mustapha Baqbou in your band!
Avatar 8:24pm
tim abdellah:

Above comment was for "Dib El Ghaba". On this track "Mali ya Mali" you can hear the actual guinbri.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm

They also used what sounded like a drum machine on I think Assalamou alykoume
Avatar 8:25pm
tim abdellah:

Definitely!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm

Love this Jilala.
Avatar 8:30pm
tim abdellah:

It's worth pointing out that Jil Jilala experimented with these electronic sounds in the early 1990s, almost 20 years after they began their career. So this is long after the time we were discussing earlier re: modernism and Moroccan-ness.

I was lucky that I chose Mediafire to host the files - so many other platforms from those early blog days have been removed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Gary:

How did Mediafire stay out of the line of fire? Fight fire with fire?
Avatar 9:08pm
tim abdellah:

I know! It was basically a random choice by me to use Mediafire when I started the blog.
Avatar 9:08pm
tim abdellah:

Boudjemaa Hgour was one of the original members and creative forces of the group. He died very young, in 1974
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Gary:

He appears on that second album you posted
Avatar 9:11pm
tim abdellah:

This album is called Hommage a Boudjemaa because it contains mid-70s remakes of songs they originally recorded with him a few years earlier.
Avatar 9:14pm
tim abdellah:

That being said, these versions are, for many, THE definitive versions of these songs, because that 2nd album with Boudjemaa is so hard to find. It remains unavailable on any of the streaming platforms, and I've never seen any sort of re-release of it. I wonder if the masters are lost.

I would love to see it!! The record sleeve says it was recorded in France, and it has a Polydor imprint. I'd imagine that a master tape or at least a clean vinyl copy exists somewhere.

Avatar 9:58pm

Yes - banjo for sure, though it looks like an American-style banjo (without the frets). I'm very curious about how it ended up being used across North Africa.
