@David in London, I can't stop repeating this insane recent Times UK headline: "Only a plonker would call time on sozzled bonking". Is that unusual? And is that really about drunken sex? And is there really anybody trying to stop drunken sex? What the hell is this Rupert Murdoch rag blabbering about? Any idea? It's behind a paywall and I'm not giving Rupert my money, so maybe I'll never know.

David (in London):

Ike, well done, you made me spurt tea out of my nose with that comment. Was that in The Times? My, how the mighty Thunderer has fallen. Being a Murdoch enemy, I would not even pick up a paper copy I saw lying about, so I don't know, but it sounds more like something from The Sun (his other paper). Sheesh. It's not something you would have seen in the days of Harold Evans, that's for damn sure. Regarding the content, I'm not sure anyone has quite yet been policing drunken bonking, but I will let you know if I hear anything.
Avatar 12:20pm

Ike / Michael - Are either of you familiar with the English writer Dennis Potter? I really don't know how well-known he is in the States. Sadly he died of cancer in the mid-90s, and during his last ever TV interview he revealed that, being a passionate Murdoch hater, he had called his cancer Rupert. It was a priceless moment of TV.

Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Phillippe Bastille:

@Hubig Me as well (I think -- I was pretty sozzled when we met...)
Avatar 12:39pm
Ike:

@Mary@12:24, "plonker" here is just a general moron or idiot if I'm not mistaken. I just wonder, in this context, if the plonker is a lawmaker, or someone petitioning a lawmaker, or if the columnist is complaining that someone wouldn't have sex with her when one or both of them was plastered. Which seems like a strange premise for a column in a once-high-minded (and snooty?) paper. In any case, the headline caused a mild stir on Twitter for being one of the most ridiculous British sentences ever written.
  12:41pm
βrian:

Did plonker evolve from something akin to a souse?
Avatar 12:42pm

It's no "Headless Body Found In Topless Bar" though, heh. That was a legendary headline.

Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
David (in London):

'Plonker' was popularised by a character called Del Boy in a TV comedy called Only Fools and Horses ("Rodney, you plonker" became something of a catch-phrase). As a show it was massive. Del Boy was a likeable grifter.
Avatar 🛎 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm

David, make sure your chat show has a drummer to provide the requisite rim-shots, heh.

Lots of PJ tribute albums, surprisingly; more than I would have thought.

One of my friends uses Lyft and he was actually arguing with the driver about politics in the middle of the trip. I was sure we were going to end up in the middle of a bridge somewhere.

I uber from airports to hotels. I get a variety of drivers, mostly OK. I generally give off a "don't f*ck with me" vibe, as a matter of principle.

Handy Haversack:

@TDK60, the past several years, I would avoid taxis from Manhattan at almost any cost. The subway was almost invariably faster. The traffic, thanks to Uber, had gotten so derangedly awful that even, say, laden down with all the gear after a softball game, I'd rather hump it to the subway and walk over the Pulaski than sit in a taxi for an hour and a half trying to get across 57th St.

CHAI was good, but *specifically* said more cake!

Great show! Lots of zip -- and pizzazz!

Be well, Wingnuts!

I think I have read all Miéville's fiction. And Salvage, a communist journal of politics, culture, and art that he is a founding editor of is the only thing I actually subscribe to.
