A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Great show, Trouble, and your posting of He Kills Me is absolutely appropriate to the moment. In the 80s and 90s I was involved in AIDS activism and that Gran Fury poster was vital to the message. We are facing a time of great urgency while national leadership smiles along in the company of the very wealthy, disregarding all scientific and humane concerns. Stinks of Reagan all over again. Frankly, this trash in the current administration is all the more vile and dangerous.

@Irene - We saw Pharaoh Sanders maybe a year ago or a little more. The energy level was lower than the classic recordings (of, course), but his tone was still there and that was a magical thing. Similar to Ben Webster, I could just listen to Sanders play themes all day.

@Yeti Bob: there is some provision for in-person voting in New Jersey on November 3, 2020; however, because the state decided to mail a ballot to every single registered voter in the state and conduct the election primarily by mail and/or early voting (depositing one's ballot at a designated Ballot Drop Box--e.g., Essex County has 24 locations throughout the county), my read is that most New Jerseyans should consider mailing or dropping off their ballots at their earliest convenience. On Election Day, New Jersey voters can also drop off their ballots at their designated polling place or, if you have a disability that makes voting unassisted difficult, or otherwise would prefer not to vote by mail/drop-off box, you can vote in person at your designated polling place via a paper, provisional ballot.

TDK - No, not really. I look on at the US system and it utterly baffles me. Here, the local authority (i.e. district in which you live) writes to you sporadically (though you can also do it online) and verifies your name and address. On election day you take the polling card they send you (with your details on), turn up at the local polling station (and they are LOCAL, mine is in a school about two minutes walk away), they check your name against the list and you vote. That's it.

Also, all registered New Jersey voters can create a "Track My Ballot" account at the State Div. of Elections website, which allows one to review one's voting history and serves as a small way to reassure one's belief in the relative integrity of the system. nj.gov...
For instance, I recently created my account and it shows my voting record back to 2011 when I washed up on the other side of the Hudson. BUT most importantly, it tracks the two prior times I voted by mail-in ballot in 2020--the May municipal election and the July Presidential primary election. In both instances, the site lists the dates my ballot was requested, issued, and received as well as the status. For the past votes, my ballot status was listed as "Accepted," i.e., not rejected for a real or perceived disqualification (improperly sealed, signed, etc.).

Passaic River Blues:

@iiibeat: there are some safeguards. For instance, in New Jersey, one's ballot is printed with their Voter ID registration number. Only one ballot carrying that number will be accepted. If you submit the ballot in person to the Board of Elections, you have to present valid identification. Voters can only submit their own ballots and, if they want another person to deliver/mail the ballot, then the bearer has to provide their name, signature, and address. Now there are various possibilities to circumvent the safeguards, but for it to be more than a negligible one-off instance would require a massive level of coordination as well as an assumption that registered voters would simply not vote themselves. Because, recall, each ballot is tied to an individual registration. ... As to "involving more parties," I think as an academic matter that may have some value. However, in the last 50 years, in my estimation they have had a net negative effect on advancing progressive ends. Nevertheless, most importantly, I can't think of a single valid reason to vote for a third-party candidate in *this* Presidential election as those on offer this year are just terrible.
