	1:03pm Dean: A 1979 review of a Nat Adderley reissue: The reissues here are from 1960, and team Nat with some of the most stimulating musicians of the time, in various settings. My favorite of the two sessions is That's Right!—presented here as sides 3 and 4 of the two-record set. The subtitle on the original LP was "Nat Adderley and the Big Sax Section," and it features tenor players Jimmy Heath (who also wrote most of the arrangements), Charlie Rouse, and Yusef Lateef, along with Cannonball on alto and Tate Houston on baritone. Nat's is the only brass instrument, and the lush, tightly arranged saxes seem to inspire him and he solos well throughout. All of the reed players are also strong soloists, and they are all provided with at least one opportunity to blow. Wynton Kelly is on piano, and his presence is an important factor. Sometimes the arrangements sound dated, as could be expected from an LP recorded 19 years ago—but most often they come off well, highlights being "You Leave Me Breathless" and "The Old Country."

	1:32pm Dean: My favorite pastrami would offend most lovers of the sandwich. It's sliced thin, steamed, and served on French rolls with a slice of melted Swiss. The house mustard is insanely hot. Johnny's on Sepulveda in Los Angeles.

	1:48pm Dean: There are two pastrami joints in LA named after a diminutive John. I mistakenly used the spelling of the other one, Johnny's, when the one I mean is Johnnie's. Been there since 1952. I was there most frequently during those decades, because we moved north in 2001. But whenever I fly into LAX, I grab a car and head north on Sepulveda.

	2:11pm coelacanth∅: Dean i don't know. radish? horseradish? i had it years ago and don't remember the brand name. it was different somehow. ...i was hoping one of the connoisseurs here would know.

	2:14pm coelacanth∅: i see now there's a plant called "polynesian mustard". maybe they threw some of that into the mustard condiment? (i doubt that's it actually) . . . chresti's probably right. maybe it was just a not-very-sweet honey mustard with lots of heat.
	2:15pm chresti: Amora is a favorite French Dijon style mustard, like Phillippe's.
	2:15pm Dean: So it's the heat that you're after. Philippe's is hot, full of horseradish, and for sale by the squeeze bottle. Used to come in glass jars, though. Trader Joe's Dijon Mustard with White Wine (obvs not Polynesian per se) isn't super hot, but it has a little kick.
	2:16pm chresti: If I can't get either, I use fresh horseradish.
	2:18pm Dean: A musician/caterer in Oakland, Phil Gelb, is selling condiments, but not for shipping, I fear. His sweet mustard is wonderful, and I've been meaning to try the hot mustard. His Sichuan chili sauce is scrumptious. Phil used to have dinner concerts at his flat. Saw a bunch of people there: David Murray, Mark Dresser, Joelle Leandre, Oliver Lake, Satoko Fujii... Miss those shows.

The dinner concerts are so great, because there are about 20 people jammed into the flat who dine with the performers. Phil is a wonderful chef, all vegan.
	2:30pm Dean: Joelle was due to appear again earlier this year. And Ken Vandermark was going to appear at a house in N. Berkeley. There's another theme for a show, Herr Stork: historical opera recitals. Or just an entire show devoted to Conchita Supervia.

Tourists used to go there, and talk through whole sets. Jarrett came out, played for a minute or so, stopped for silence, didn't speak. Started and stopped 2 more times, then got up, left the stage, that was it. Wouldn't see him, or listen to his recordings for years after that was so pissed. Oh well...)

	1:03pm Dean: A 1979 review of a Nat Adderley reissue: The reissues here are from 1960, and team Nat with some of the most stimulating musicians of the time, in various settings. My favorite of the two sessions is That's Right!—presented here as sides 3 and 4 of the two-record set. The subtitle on the original LP was "Nat Adderley and the Big Sax Section," and it features tenor players Jimmy Heath (who also wrote most of the arrangements), Charlie Rouse, and Yusef Lateef, along with Cannonball on alto and Tate Houston on baritone. Nat's is the only brass instrument, and the lush, tightly arranged saxes seem to inspire him and he solos well throughout. All of the reed players are also strong soloists, and they are all provided with at least one opportunity to blow. Wynton Kelly is on piano, and his presence is an important factor. Sometimes the arrangements sound dated, as could be expected from an LP recorded 19 years ago—but most often they come off well, highlights being "You Leave Me Breathless" and "The Old Country."

	2:15pm Dean: So it's the heat that you're after. Philippe's is hot, full of horseradish, and for sale by the squeeze bottle. Used to come in glass jars, though. Trader Joe's Dijon Mustard with White Wine (obvs not Polynesian per se) isn't super hot, but it has a little kick.

	2:18pm Dean: A musician/caterer in Oakland, Phil Gelb, is selling condiments, but not for shipping, I fear. His sweet mustard is wonderful, and I've been meaning to try the hot mustard. His Sichuan chili sauce is scrumptious. Phil used to have dinner concerts at his flat. Saw a bunch of people there: David Murray, Mark Dresser, Joelle Leandre, Oliver Lake, Satoko Fujii... Miss those shows.

	2:26pm Dean: Phil has boundless energy and goodwill, even under present circumstances. He's also an improviser on shakuhachi, has a few records. The dinner concerts are so great, because there are about 20 people jammed into the flat who dine with the performers. Phil is a wonderful chef, all vegan.
	2:30pm Dean: Joelle was due to appear again earlier this year. And Ken Vandermark was going to appear at a house in N. Berkeley. There's another theme for a show, Herr Stork: historical opera recitals. Or just an entire show devoted to Conchita Supervia.

Tourists used to go there, and talk through whole sets. Jarrett came out, played for a minute or so, stopped for silence, didn't speak. Started and stopped 2 more times, then got up, left the stage, that was it. Wouldn't see him, or listen to his recordings for years after that was so pissed. Oh well...)
