Hello Bryce. Just back from voting. I was lucky, the whole process took only 15 minutes. Others in this city have waited 3, 4, 5 hours.
  1:29pm
Naila:

Can I ask what might seem like a daft and naive question from the UK. Why are the queues so massive at the polling stations in the US? Are there not many polling stations or volunteers? Every picture you see on the news looks like it must take hours to cast your vote...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
David (in London):

This is going to be one of those shows where everything gets a clicky star.
Hey TDK.
Avatar 1:33pm
TDK60:

Naila, brace yourself. There are different election rules, procedures in these 50 states. Then, there's also voter suppression maneuvers. Like in Texas, I think the governor mandated only one early-voting ballot drop box for each county. And many other tricks like that exist to thwart democracy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Naila: There are a lot of instances where multiple polling places were closed. The claim it was due to cost-cutting measures but yeah...voter suppression. Also, distancing requirements. AND there's been a huge uptick if voter turnout.

Yeah, it does look like a mess from the outside...because it IS.
  1:34pm
Naila:

Good grief
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
David (in London):

I'm glad you asked that Naila, because it's always baffled me too.
  1:36pm
Naila:

Thanks for the useful explanation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm
tim from champaign (now washington):

@Naila - That's not a daft or naive question. In my personal opinion, I think it really varies city to city and region to region based on population density, time of day and how the area in question votes (in person vs mail in, early voting vs day of, et al). There's also the factors that TDK60 described. I live in a state that is primarily mail in voting. The ballot is mailed to every registered voter who has the option of returning the ballot by mail or ballot drop box. There's also a voting precinct for in person voting on the day of the election.
Avatar 1:38pm
Ike:

@Naila, depends on the location and whether or not it's run by conservatives who want to suppress the vote (say, Georgia) or just an incompetent patronage-ridden Board of Elections (here in New York). That said, I went near closing time to vote early on Wednesday and there was no line. I was done in 5 minutes. Others have waited hours, even the mayor. It varies wildly.
Avatar 1:38pm
TDK60:

Early voting in New York City has been massive. The mayor chided the Board of Elections, ordered more voting machines installed immediately.
  1:39pm
Naila:

Wow! Thank you. That’s so interesting and really shocking. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but even so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

@Naila - Mean and stupid jerk people have weaseled themselves in charge of things here and aim to keep it that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Handy Haversack:

It is crucial to remember that the system here works just fine. It is also crucial to remember that the system here exists first and foremost to deny the franchise to Black Americans, then any other person of color, and then the working class and poor as much as can be. The system is almost flawless. It's just a racist, capitalist system of oppression and control. And it works every damn time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Having the states in charge is both good and bad. Having the federal government in charge, in the case of the current administration, would be frightening.

WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Handy: Yes. And of course we were not taught the real reason or the existence of the electoral college. Just that hooey about small states not being ignored. I'm sure they still teach that.

Ike:

To expand a bit: Voting varies so much from state to state that, for instance, here in New York, we have something called "fusion voting" where candidates can appear on multiple party ballot lines at the same time, and voting on any line still counts just as much for that candidate. (New Yorkers, vote for Biden on the *Working Families Party* line please!) But that doesn't exist anywhere else in the US. (It was common in the 19th century.) Maine has instituted a GREAT idea, Ranked Choice Voting. People can rank ALL the candidates on their ballot instead of a basic, dumb "first past the post"/plurality-wins system. I love it, we need that EVERYWHERE. (NYC will soon have it, but only for certain city elections.)
Avatar 1:43pm
TDK60:

Hello David in Londonham. / Handy, I have to agree. More democracy is what's needed, not just electoral but in the workplace and neighborhoods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
fred:

It's also important to pledge to WFMU. But vote as well. Don't waste time figuring out which is more important: punt and do both
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Not sure if this link will work outside the U.S. www.pbs.org... Documentary on public TV about voter suppression.
Avatar 1:44pm
YETI BOB:

Chicago, being a Democratic stronghold, has made voting pretty easy, early voting started Oct 1 and there are plenty of places to turn in ballots. I think it's harder for the red team to play their dirty tricks here. (Of course the "Democratic Machine" gets accused of its own excesses, but I'll take those)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Handy Haversack:

fred makes an excellent point.

tim from champaign (now washington):

I'm pretty worried about the governor's race here in Washington. It's seems like current governor Jay Inslee is a shoe-in but in driving around my county for work I see only 1 Inslee sign for every 10 of his opponent's signs. His opponent is this jag off sherrif from a rural small town who wants to lock up drug users and clean the scum off the street in Seattle blah blah blah.

@chresti - I heard a report that one of the parties was setting up fake drop-off boxes in California. The party that shouts "voter fraud" at every turn.

TDK - Corbyn was definitely the target of smears, but some of the very damaging flak he took was entirely justified. Party politics aside, some of his past actions just wouldn't play well with the electorate no matter their political orientation. I had some interface with him about fifteen years ago when I was working in Islington, where he was an MP. Essentially, he was a very good constituency MP, but probably not the smartest choice as party leader. But that's just my take.

@tim - oh, just normal volunteer things, stuffing envelopes, bon mots. absolutely no one talked to or treated me like a "kid." was just a fellow misfit. i knew i'd be around for a LONG time, lmao. a year later, the music director started putting me on overnights! what a freak show, this joint....

Another POV would be “past actions wouldn’t play well” is the essence of smears. The type of thing we’d reject out of hand as the “they were no schoolboys” trope when we see it deployed against police violence victims. But imo, ofc

diana & krys, i actually shut them IN my room at night. otherwise, they'll knock glasses off my downstairs neighbors' shelves.

THere's a gamelan master musician from Bali who teaches at the school of music at U of Illinois. He'd teach a gamelan orchestra class for music students and community students. There'd be a concert at the end of each semester. I'd go see it every chance I could.

C∅: That was a different ensemble. The group I play with - CBG - was founded in 2017. @tim: Do you mean Pak Asnawa Tutde? He comes up from Champaign to help and advise us. And we play some of his compositions. He's a wonderful, generous man (although at first I was a bit intimidated by him and his directness - "No! You are playing that wrong!")

Stepchild - I was in a town in Essex, at our regional office there, when Corbyn visited for the day. To a man and a woman, the building rose, went to the window and started boo-ing. It wasn't that he 'was no schoolboy' or that he'd been smeared, it was that people had long memories for things he'd said and done. And believe me, it isn't a right wing or Tory town. If he couldn't get people onside there, it wasn't going to happen anywhere. Again, just my take on it though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm

haha now i'm confused!
... he's in kingston ny, near me. somebody i know personally is or was in another gamelan group near here, and i don't think it's the same one as Henry.
