Nikolai Korndorf  In Honour of Alfred Schnittke (AGSH), Trio for Violin, Viola and Cello, II., III. Aria - Andante   Favoriting Patricia Kopatchinskaja - violin, Daniel Raiskin - viola, Alexander Ivashkin - cello http://www.musiconmain.ca/essay/nikolai-korndorf-his-music-and-aesthetics/ "Korndorf’s music is shocking, in part because it is so massive – it demands a serious expanse of time and a huge emotional commitment. His large-scale forms unveil themselves extremely slowly; a “short” Korndorf piece lasts 20 minutes, a longer one lasts easily over an hour."  0:40:43 (Pop-up)

For us streaming listeners this is truly Ear a tating to listen to.
The break up is intentional, yes?
Avatar 8:07pm
Bethany Ryker:

Must be a streaming or buffering issue, definitely not part of what is being beamed out from the studio here! Sorry if that's the case

Radio sounds fine

Bethany Ryker:

This piece does have live electronic processing with a live string quartet, so in this case, all splits and splinters are intended!

was just wondering if that was intentional, bethany, haha.thanks for the info!

What is the difference, if any, between musical pause, and musical space?
Avatar 8:26pm
Richard S:

A pause has one of those symbols in it?

Hello Bethany, listeners.
  8:28pm
scott:

That is just a 'rest' symbol, don't make sound, very short or many 'whole' written bar after bar.
Avatar 8:28pm
Bethany Ryker:

@scott, that's an interesting question, very nuanced and at the moment I wish I had more to say, but it's got me thinkin'
Avatar 8:30pm
Bethany Ryker:

a 'rest' would imply metered time, a pause happens outside of that....at the performer (or conductor's) discretion. Is that the idea?

Any NY-area folks remember a place on E28th in Manhattan, WMP Music Hall? One of the joys of my life while it was there. It was a violin restoration studio with a small (~100 person?) concert hall. Every Wednesday at 12:30, for a suggested donation of $10, you could catch a changing program of professionals and Juilliard students playing on Stradivariuses and Guarneris. Of course, because NYC's gonna NYC, it's no longer there, the building owners thought they might make some more money off of someone else.

Anyway, the mention of Bartok brought back that memory. Saw a great performance of some Bartok pieces for violin and piano. Here's WMP's old site: wmpconcerthall.com

Quite a three.

Wow, mariano, thanks for that, and for sharing the link

Ligeti always does more with less. No effects or granular delays required - simply astounding playing. Like the metronome piece - low tech, high concept. This sounds like more than a quartet.
