Today was my last day of teaching in person for the semester and we had a classroom that was right next to a highway. It sounded like distant ocean waves crashing all day, oddly soothing.

@chresti@7:35, they don't have the silly outdoor ads for oat milk in L.A.? Lots of NYC buses have them. I usually hate ads, but some of them are actually kind of funny.

@NGH, you said no chocolate? I'd have trouble living like that. Can you have unsweetened chocolate? I found really good Ecuadorian unsweetened chocolate in bulk at a little Latin American market in Queens. Eating that with some honey or agave is not quite as satisfying as with cane sugar, but it's still quite nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm
chresti:

Oh yeah, Oatly. I think I saw an ads for it in a magazine. I used to like chocolate soy milk with coffee, it frothed up nice, but suddenly, like 3 or so years ago, TJs didn't have it anymore, I could sometimes find it in Asian markets.

The track name is, "do you remember?". THe album is, "after the rave".

I can have dark barely sweetened chocolate (it's sugar that hurts my intestines)
Avatar 8:38pm
Ike:

That's understandable. I suspect I'm mildly addicted to sugar, even though I eat less of it than a lot of people. Even thinking about trying to stop is kind of painful. And I love things that break down into sugar. Bread, rice, potatoes, my faves.

I wonder if that Lily's stuff is any good (stevia chocolate bars).

My backyard tree stopped dropping acorns a while ago, I harvested almost a cup of ground meal so I supplimented with corn meal a little. Made it in a skillet in the oven like I would cornbread.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
chresti:

Do you have to do something with the acorns first? Like wash them with lye?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
StringOFperils:

Are acorns similar to chesnuts re. texture and flavour? I don't think I've tried acorns.
Avatar 8:59pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

most acorns have too much tannin to eat without some soaking. I chopped mine very fine and put them in a jar with cold water that I drained and shook every couple of days. I think you can do it with hot water too but you loose a lot of the acorness somehow.
Avatar 9:00pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

I think chestnuts are sweeter but there are apparently lots of different kinds of acorns that taste pretty different from eachother. white oaks are generally sweeter than red oaks from what I've read
Avatar 9:00pm
ifny:

You don't need to wash them in lye, but you do need to leach them with water. Some varieties are sweet (aka low tannins) but some are high.

Avatar 9:02pm

Also, look for trees that drop acorns with small caps -- the smaller the cap the lower the tannin level.

There's a good guide to cold leaching here: freshbitesdaily.com... They mistakenly refer to Native Americans in the past tense, but the acorn info itself is solid.

i collected lunchbags full of acorns from our fairly small yard as a child. i guess mostly for acorn fights. my mother wouldn't allow them into the house, saying we'd have an insect infestation.

Good to see Tresor is still around.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm
StringOFperils:

I had that happen with seed cones from pines and other conifers. I like the natural form of them and take them home sometimes. A lot of insects like to live in there as it turns out.
Avatar 9:30pm
northguineahills:

(I once made a mixtape for a girl called, "when tresor (the club) was it!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
coelacanth∅:

i collected large pine cones on a trip out west, for the same reason. i liked them! -also little tiny ones, to make xmas tree orniments of, as demonstrated by my recently exed danish girlfriend.
i guess whatever may've been living in them came out into my car before i got back to the east coast a few months later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
coelacanth∅:

...i also collected things from trees that i never did identify.
Avatar 9:34pm

Oops, sorry! :0
Avatar 9:38pm
northguineahills:

The pine cones from long pines here in FL are gigantic. Usually about 7-11"s
Avatar 9:38pm
ifny:

Cold leaching is far less work than boiling btw. Acorns can either be super labour intensive, or moderately labour intensive, depending on how you play it. Considering you can collect them for free, you could also take into account the hours you don't have to work to buy food, and all the environmental savings you create by eating a local wild food source. Buggy acorns are somewhat easy to spot -- you either look for holes or see if they float -- and any acorn without a cap probably has a buggy guest.
Avatar 9:38pm
northguineahills:

(you don't want them to fall on your car....)
