Hello Jan and streamers. One time I took voice lessons and Impossible Dream was the first song assignment. I didn't last past 4 lessons (which was the minimumI had paid for). In retrospect perhaps she was letting me know the odds of me improving my singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Paper Kosmonaut:

Ah.. I think I see what you're doing with the pictures, Jan!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 11:07am

My girlfriend and me always have discussions over who was the best female jazz vocalist and we always end up with Ella F. and Sarah Vaughan where scatting is concerned. We think Ella technically was the best but musically we both think Sarah Vaughan wins.

Granny, It all adds to our experience, I guess. In that sense this is such a unique period we live in.
The song was about an illegal broadcaster who was caught by the cops.

It's about an illegal 27MC radio amateur who is caught by police.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am

Dingetje used to make all kinds of more or less funny novelty singles. Sometimes parodies of existing songs, sometimes originals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Otis:

I'll be switching to a Raisin, Nutmeg & Cinnamon Loaf next Gran. Alternating with the bagels, but I am hooked on the Rosemary/Sea Salt ones, with butter and strawberry jam right now. Mmmmmm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Paper Kosmonaut:

ooh Otis, that sounds delicious.

Mx. Granny (e/em):

Every now and then, Jan has to flip our wigs. LOL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am
Otis:

You know, it really really is. Reminds me a bit of a couple of cafe instances in my past years where regular meetups would happen. Grab your cup, sit out front, chat and sip. From Seattle there was a place Coffee Messiah I loved on Capitol Hill and in SF, Phil's off of Mission (and 24th if my memory is still good) for Turkish with a mint leaf and I would bring my own chocolate bar and sit outside.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 11:54am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Feldpausch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am
Mx. Granny (e/em):

Otis, i'll never forget the first time i had that Philz Turkish with the mint leaf. Strong stuff. Miss loitering about in cafes, but WFMU—and especially the characters in Sheena's—are an option for which i am daily grateful <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am
Otis:

Here Here, Toastin' my water and coffee to that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am
Paper Kosmonaut:

And to hook in on that, a lot of alternative bands that visited the rock club in my hometown of Groningen said it reminded them of Seattle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am

Took a moment to look up the Standing on a Corner song. It is from a musical, Most Happy Fella by Frank Loesser. Bookmarking for further investigation regarding the context. Im thinking most versions and general perception are removed from the original context. It definitely has assumed cringe worthy status.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Mx. Granny (e/em):

WR: hope to hear more about that! it's hard to hear lines like "Brother you can't go to jail for what you're thinking" without cringing!

Lovely atypical Abdullah Ibrahim / Dollar Brand tune.

My curiosity is aroused even more due to past co-worker who touted Most Happy Fella by Loesser as superior to any Mozart opera.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, Granny. that sentence makes it definitely creepy. I hope it's referring to something in the story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Otis:

There's also the line about the cat getting the cream. I'm just going to imagine it's about my 2 little kitties wanting something more than water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Otis:

On another note and a very lovely one .. Happy Winter Solstice everyone!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm

Yes and The Shaggs were better than the Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Otis:

Yes! That reminds me, there was that compilation years back of Shaggs covers. Need to grab that one again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Mx. Granny (e/em):

as far as i can tell, the context of "Standing on the Corner" is a bunch of farmhands expressing admiration for their boss who caught the fancy of a younger woman. They don't got no women, so they can only look…and think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm

Here's a little dish of Krupuk (prawn crackers). And there's a dish of Ajam Paniki (mild spicy chicken), some Atjar Tjampur (sweet and sour shredded white cabbage) and there's the rice. Help yourself. be careful with the Sambal Badjak (hot spicy pepper sauce/paste).
