Listener comments!

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:58am
WR:

Looks like a very organized basement to me. Your recent comments led me to expect piles of LPs.
  11:59am
Dean:

Looks like my in-laws' basement in Portland! Except for the records.
Avatar 12:00pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, WR! This level of organization is pretty new. I recently got more shelves, and moved the records off the floor.
Avatar 12:00pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:02pm
listener james from westwood:

Good Tuesday, Tony and all! Look at all those rekkids!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm
Cmurtha:

That's a lot of records. And a secret door
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Cmurtha:

Hello everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
chresti:

Morning Tony and forks! What a spacious and clean looking basement!
  12:05pm
rw:

Good morning! Less than quarter way through the intro I knew... This is the Basement Show.
  12:05pm
rw:

Well played.
Avatar 12:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, James and Cmurtha! I am both proud and embarrassed to say that what's seen in that pic is just a small part of my vinyl collection. I definitely have a disease.
Avatar 12:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Greetings, chresti and rw!
  12:06pm
rw:

Now I'm curious about the cassette filing system...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
Cmurtha:

I unironically love that STYX synth sound. I know other bands had it too, but that's what my brain jumps to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm
spodiodi:

good morning, Tony!
good morning, everyone!
Avatar 12:08pm
Tony Coulter:

My cassettes are really disorganized, because I don't have much shelving for them. Many of them are just piled up in boxes. Those white boxes on the floor between the record shelves have cassettes in them, btw.
  12:09pm
rw:

If you edit down to just the records visible on the right, that's about what I've got. Diseased or reasonably healthy?
Avatar 12:09pm
Tony Coulter:

Morning, spodi!
  12:11pm
rw:

I'm glad I don't have a basement. Garage here is cluttered enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Cmurtha:

I wonder if you could get those old caset tower/box shelf things on the cheap nowadays? I know cassettes are having a bit of renisance like other physical media that might be jacking up the price on them, but I have to imagine there are a ton of them nobody is using...Unless they all got dumped.
Avatar 12:14pm
Tony Coulter:

A record store near me will be closing in a couple of weeks. I'm hoping to snag some cassette shelving from them.
  12:14pm
rw:

I found a nice cassette rack at the thrift store late last year and gave it to my son for Xmas. It was the gift I was most excited about giving.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
listener james from westwood:

@CmurthaL I'll wager the odd garage sale here and there where the sellers don't realize the resurgence of interest is your best bet.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
listener james from westwood:

Sad for the record store closure, psyched for the possible shelving!
  12:16pm
Dean:

Which store?
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

The Sandy Everyday Music.
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

The whole building is getting demolished.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Yvang:

Hello Tony and all! Happy basement party!
  12:18pm
Dean:

Lovely. The record store where I worked in the late '70s is now an Amazon store.
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Yvang!
  12:21pm
rw:

Loving the particular level of cheese in these selections.
Avatar 12:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Cheese can be very tasty.
  12:22pm
rw:

Aged to perfection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Rich in Washington:

Hello, Tony!
Which store is closing soon, pray tell?
Avatar 12:26pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich! The Sandy Everyday Music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh. I see it now.
I heard about the Sandy Everyday closure. Kind of sad, not sad.
Used to haunt that store pretty regularly in the earlyish 2000s but they really let their selection and diversity of music go downhill.
Avatar 12:32pm
Tony Coulter:

They've actually been pretty good for used CDs this last year or so -- but definitely bad for vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Rich in Washington:

yeah, there's a whole wave of people dumping CDs again. Reminds me of buying used records in the 90s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
listener james from westwood:

Yikes, carbon tetrachloride contamination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Rich in Washington:

So rarely go to record stores anymore. I think since the pandemic, nearly 90% of my musical purchases have been via Bandcamp or Discogs marketplace.
  12:35pm
rw:

Buying music on the internet has its own merits but it DOES take a bit of the fun away.
Avatar 12:39pm
Tony Coulter:

I hope listener Nick S. is hearing the show he won -- though, of course, he can always listen to the archive later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Cmurtha:

In addition to unironically loving that STYX-type synth, I am a huge sucker for easy listening, lite jazz, Muzak, jazz-rock, and the like.
  12:41pm
rw:

Playboy Records??
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

@ rw: Yep! Hugh Hefner's label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Cmurtha:

killer synth solo lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Cmurtha:

OH SHIT THE DRUMS
  12:45pm
rw:

Cmurtha, I know a guy who collects Muzak. Evidently it's programmed to coincide with the work day... easing you in, picking up the tempo a bit when you get tired in the afternoon, etc. Basically engineering your mood for maximum productivity throughout the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Cmurtha:

Interesting I didn't know that.
  12:49pm
rw:

Tony, I remember thinking in the '70s that the '70s kind of sucked, but now I'm not so sure!
  12:50pm
Mark Williams:

hey Tony & everyone. Saying hi from the West Coast for a change. I'm with my mother and sister near Tacoma, WA.
Avatar 12:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Mark!
Avatar 12:52pm
Tony Coulter:

@ rw: Ha! I'm glad the show is having that effect. If I had played different tracks from some of these same albums, you might have had the opposite reaction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Cmurtha:

I'm grading finals, and I knew letting the college students compare WWI and WWI would be a mistake because they all would choose that essay over the others...Yet I let them do it. A fool am I. I am waiting for that breath of Fresh air student who didn't pick that prompt.
Avatar 12:54pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: Keep meaning to get back to Tacoma. I usually go right by it on the way to Seattle. Tacoma has many record stores (or, at least, used to).
  12:56pm
rw:

Cmurtha, I'm embarrassingly lacking when it comes to knowledge of history but there's a pretty amazing WWI museum in Kansas City. Worth visiting if you're ever in the area. That is of course if all these essays haven't spoiled it for you.
  12:57pm
rw:

And this is beside the point but my grandfather fought in WWI and was a plane spotter in WWII.
  1:00pm
Mark Williams:

@Tony - yeah, there's one around the corner on 6th Ave that I've not been to yet. Might be newer, though.
Avatar 1:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Weird. I see it's not possible to "like" this Oleg Kutsenko track -- because, I guess, the title isn't in the Roman alphabet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
spodiodi:

i think appending extra characters that are will remedy that issue, Tony (but i may be wrong)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
spodiodi:

pretty sure thats what Ironybread did in a similar case (and it did)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
spodiodi:

ah yes. very well
Avatar 1:06pm
Tony Coulter:

You're right! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm

sure thing!
Avatar 1:08pm
Nick S.:

Hey, Tony! Work bearing down on me but here I am. Right on!
Avatar 1:09pm
Nick S.:

Love the pic of your archives, btw. So organized!
Avatar 1:10pm
Nick S.:

I got that Whiz Kids record btw.
Avatar 1:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Nick! Glad you're catching at least part of "your" show!
Avatar 1:11pm
Nick S.:

Haha! This one will be archived so I'll listen to what I missed. Thanks, Tony!
Avatar 1:13pm
Miles:

Mansplanation Tuesday!
  1:14pm
Andres:

Hi, Tony! I’ve enjoyed many a basement record listening party. Although they ended when my friend’s relationship did. The spouse not wanting to join in on the party might have been a warning sign.
Avatar 1:15pm
Tony Coulter:

Hi, Miles! Hi, Andres!
Avatar 1:17pm
Miles:

👋
Avatar 1:17pm
Nick S.:

What Bowie record is this?
Avatar 1:17pm
Tony Coulter:

It does sound like Bowie!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Yvang:

Maybe it's his 'My Little Pony' record.
  1:18pm
Andres:

The worrier in me would like to see a few extra inches of clearance under those shelving units. Plumber neighbour has shared many a story about burst pipes and failed water heaters ruining a basement’s contents with just a few inches.
Avatar 1:18pm
Nick S.:

Well, he does and the arrangements but that's where it ends, imo. Libra is more proggy.
  1:20pm
rw:

Alright, I need to head out. Thanks as always Tony! And thanks to you too Nick S! Have a good Tuesday everyone!
Avatar 1:21pm
Tony Coulter:

See you, rw!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Cmurtha:

same to you RW!
  1:24pm
Mark Williams:

Painter would be my idea of a version of Styx that was occasionally tolerable.
Avatar 1:24pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Andres: The basement floor is sloped and has two built-in drains -- plus my water vac is always at the ready. So, hopefully, the records are safe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm
spodiodi:

see you, rw!
Avatar 1:25pm
Tony Coulter:

Weirdly, one part of that Painter track (just a phrase really, I guess) reminds me of Jefferson Airplane.
  1:27pm
Andres:

Good drainage, good to hear.
  1:27pm
Mark Williams:

probably a better shout overall, Tony.
  1:29pm
Andres:

Dug that guitar solo at the end!
  1:30pm
Mark Williams:

one of the common refrains of any history involving Rush is that Canadian bands were systematically pigeon-holed out of the US market, never mind international ones. And April Wine is always the poster child of 'if only they'd gotten a fair shake.'
Avatar 1:31pm
Nick S.:

April Wine rules!
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Their first record was already upstairs. That third one (we just heard from) will now stay upstairs too.
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

(Don't have the second.)
  1:35pm
Mark Williams:

it's ok Tony, we know you're not a REAL April Wine fan...
Avatar 1:36pm
Nick S.:

Lynx sounded like Alice Cooper quite a bit. Really liked it too.
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

Lynx is Canadian as well. And, yes, agreed, it did sound like Alice Cooper.
Avatar 1:40pm
Nick S.:

Ah! An On The Road song. Should do a comp of those for the next premium, Tony!
  1:44pm
Andres:

Did you receive a Canada Council For The Arts Grant for that last set? ;)
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

Just some Canadian dollars in a sealed envelope. And a jug of maple syrup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony & all
Avatar 1:47pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Nick: Good idea! I've also thought of compiling covers of "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" -- ironically, there are so many of them.
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, coel!
Avatar 1:50pm
Nick S.:

I wish we had a laugh emoji or something for the comments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Cmurtha:

I think you can copy and paste them in despite them not being native. Let's test that 🤣
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
Cmurtha:

That last track had real Birth Control vibes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Cmurtha:

or maybe Birth Control has real Strongbow vibes, I don't know the order of development here
Avatar 1:57pm
Tony Coulter:

Birth Control is a band I really don't know that well. Eventually I plan to rectify that.
Avatar 2:17pm
Nick S.:

Birth Control is a favorite of mine. Tony you'd dig them. I would also recommend Il Balletto Di Bronzo ‎– Ys
Avatar 2:19pm
Tony Coulter:

Il Balletto Di Bronzo I know and like. Just somehow never spent much time with Birth Control. I do have some of their stuff, tho ... so I have no excuse.
Avatar 2:22pm
Tony Coulter:

In case Black Sheep's vocalist sounds familiar ... it's Lou Gramm, later of Foreigner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
B R M:

I was literally typing the words "This sounds so much like Lou Graham" when you posted that 🤣
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
spodiodi:

ahhh so. it does now you mention it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
B R M:

and I spelled it wrong as proof! *ha*
Avatar 2:24pm
Tony Coulter:

@ BRM: Ha! (Greetings!)
  2:25pm
Another Miles?:

Lou Gramm! No wonder this sounds so great.
Avatar 2:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Another Miles? Yep, it was Lou Gramm -- but when he was still using his real name: Louis Grammatico.
  2:27pm
Another Miles?:

Lynx sounds so much like America they should've called themselves "Canada."
Avatar 2:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Another Black Sheep track is coming up shortly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
Rich in Washington:

So weirdly America-esque.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
Cmurtha:

I was about to say this sounds weirdly like a slowed Ventura Highway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh. Lynx suddenly got into the fast lane.
Avatar 2:29pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Another Miles: "they should've called themselves 'Canada.'" Good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm
Rich in Washington:

My cousin Ronald had a '76 Lynx. Ran it out of transmission fluid. That was the end of that.
Avatar 2:31pm
Nick S.:

Lou Gramm! I knew it.
Avatar 2:32pm
Nick S.:

This period of April Wine still sounded 60s, eh?
Avatar 2:33pm
Tony Coulter:

It did!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm

These guys were listening to STYX *ha*
Avatar 2:46pm

Interestingly, Winterhawk was a Native American band.
