hating on the Beatles is trendy these days. I love them. They changed everything. But there are other greats from that time also.
Avatar 10:20pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah ok - Beatles as prolific & consistent & most representative even - but I balk if the entire Rawk Revolution of the 1960s isn't recognized. Say ...top of the pyramid maybe - probly even - but not in a vacuum.
  10:20pm
Robm:

@Julie it is just that i hear the same songs over and over, and just gets old
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Julie:

Yes! When I play them I try to pick something I know less. I've been surprised how many of their songs I don't know that well.

Robm:

@Julie noticed that thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

Robm:

Okay off my Beatles soapbox
Avatar 10:24pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Particularly since holding the 2009 Remasters box in one hand - I see the entire Beatles oeuvre as one body of work. I'm in too deep for any to be especially lesser known personally ...but there's great diversity there. TheBeatles were devoted to both the Twin Gawds of Excellence & Change.

Avatar 10:31pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Zappa is so sardonic & cynical - can leave a bitter aftertaste. Sometimes felt like he'd rather be writing for orchestras & was just slumming it with Rawk audiences. Not that I always disagree with his views - in fact he was a super-relevant Voice in the Culture - something like what Jello Biafra became later. & what brings me back to Zappa & the Mothers is - mygawd - the Musicianship ! It got simply incredible. & of course ...a lot of the time he is really freaking funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

oh he was a great voice, always like him as a person just had trouble getting into his music.

  11:00pm
Dean:

I have to add that even though I don't enjoy Cohen's writing, I like the fact that now and then I get to hear him thanks to y'all.

Mundane is one way to put it. Mostly I'm not favorably impressed with his poetry and music. Which isn't to say I'm not at all impressed. I can smell a Cohen tune a mile away.

A buddy of mine stayed with us last weekend. He revealed that his favorite live rock album is this Renaissance album! And in fact he referred to "Ashes Are Burning" as an example!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Julie:

oh wow...I found this double LP for like $1 at the WFMU record fair!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
MHLee:

I have a few Rennaisance live albums and one studio album on cd. The live albums are great.
  11:02pm
Dean:

I caught Renaissance live around this time at the Greek Theater in LA. Jean Luc-Ponty opened.

I once owned the album, but sold it. Just a week ago I found it again for two bucks, but I wasn't happy with the condition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Julie:

I saw them live a few years ago, don't know how many of THEM are there, maybe it's just Annie and her backing band now, but they were amazing. I think they're playing this fall at either the beacon or town hall I forget.
Avatar 11:03pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Startled to read so many dismiss Cohen. Think of him as Dylan's strongest contender for the pole position. Couldn't imagine a world without those songs. Basically the opposite opinion. Will note however that Cave observed that everyone interprets Cohen in such a po-faced manner. He's actually very funny.
  11:03pm
Dean:

I'm thinking my favorite live album is Yessongs or Allman Brothers at Fillmore East.

Yeah, I don't like Nick Cave, either. My thing.
Avatar 11:04pm
David Shortell:

I seem to have hocked my Renaissance debut LP with the two Yardbirds on it. Renaissance did not achieve quite the same success as that other group which rose out of the Yardbirds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Julie:

oh yeah there's definitely a droll sense of humor at work there.
  11:05pm
Dean:

First two Renaissance albums were the Yardbirds offshoot. By the time the first *other* Renaissance album appeared, there was no direct connection to Yardbirds.
Avatar 11:05pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Never needed Springsteen very much myself - but I think the earlier stuff with too many words to be trendy is pretty high quality.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Julie:

I know those first two the least. I have them but I'm all about Annie, really
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Julie:

@Rev i think that is the general FMU position. although I enjoy a couple of his hits, I think he's overrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Julie:

by the time I heard springsteen he felt like a mellencamp knockoff to me
Avatar 11:08pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

NickCave I think is incredible - but I don't too often want to 'go there' - to that Noir world. Someone can be really good - & just present a World you don't want to emotionally or consciously inhabit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
MHLee:

What's Rennasainces first, is it not on an island?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
Julie:

it's just called Renaissance and no Annie on it, Keith's wife instead
