	1:38pm Dean: Even though Mark Perry was a prime mover of punk rock via Sniffin' Glue, ATV seems more post- than not.
	1:40pm Tony Coulter: Oh, way more post-punk than punk, I'd say, except for the first LP.

	🥁 ♥ 1:43pm David (in London): Always an interesting debate to be had around what is the first post punk record. Ah, Fire Engines. Still have such a soft spot for Get Up and Use Me.
	1:51pm Tony Coulter: Many sources say post-punk "started" in 1978, but there's stuff from '77 that sounds post-punk to me -- like the XTC track I played today, for example ("Dance Band").

	🥁 ♥ 1:54pm David (in London): I've often made a case for In the Shadows by The Stranglers, but wouldn't argue with your interpretation / XTC either Tony.

	1:55pm Dean: My sense is that post-punk stands for "not straight-ahead Ramones 4/4." By that admittedly strict definition Pere Ubu's first single in 1975 might count. Residents? Metal Machine Music? I do hear an industrial influence to some of what we call post-punk, e.g., the Gang of Four track you played earlier.
	2:00pm Tony Coulter: Yeah, I agree totally, actually. There's no way to say when it really started. I could easily play pre-punk stuff that would fit in with today's offerings

	2:08pm Dean: Middle Class, often credited with kick-starting hardcore, arrived in '78. That first single is a doozy, very unlike the album from 1982.
	🥁 ♥ 2:08pm David (in London): Mm, I would maybe argue that those are proto punk. Post punk seem to contain an inbuilt argument of music liberated by, but building on, the energy of punk. By definition, therefore, can you have music that predates the punk genre? Answers on a post(punk)card please...

	2:12pm Dean: That is the question. If what makes it not-quite-punk is simply a deviation from cranked-up, sped-up common time rock 'n' roll, then yes, post- can predate the genre to which the hyphen links it.
	2:13pm Dean: The Stooges, The New York Dolls, et al., were laying the groundwork for music with liberated energy.
	2:14pm Tony Coulter: @ David (in London): I agree with you at one level -- but then again, post-punk bands were shaped by so many things other than punk, including pre-punk weirdness. The way, for example, P.I.L. was influenced by Can. I'd say the only thing that can really be nailed down is when people started using the term "post-punk."
	🥁 ♥ 2:17pm doctorjazz: Cool set! My younger daughter is. Pop-punk devotee, I heat lots of the current crop, (Green Day, Blink-182, All Time Low, Fall Out Boy, etc). Speed is optional these days.

	🥁 ♥ 2:18pm David (in London): Agreed Tony, but Lydon had already 'done' punk before he moved into post punk, which seems to by definition to be 'punk expanding to encompass' other genres, dub, motorik etc. Dolls, Stooges etc al are titans, but I would argue proto punk. No one is mistaking Personality Crisis for post punk.

	2:19pm rw: Okay. Just got to work. If I may chime in, I say docjazz’ daughter is most def post-punk.
	2:20pm Dean: There's some evidence, too, that punk bands were dubbed "art punk" if they toyed with conventions established in, say, '76. I agree that the Dolls, etc., predate the punk phenomenon. My point was simply that bands contemporaneous with early punk bands already had a "liberated energy" model from which to expand their approaches.

	2:25pm Tony Coulter: @ David (in London): I totally agree that most of what gets called post-punk wouldn't have happened without punk (including P.I.L. -- you're right on that), but some of it would have existed anyway, drawing on other roots.

I think a fundamental definition of post punk includes 'liberated to explore other genres and incorporate them into the punk ethos'. Hence why, for me, punk needs to have happened first before it can subsequently be expanded. Anyway, I'll put a sock in it now.

	2:44pm Tony Coulter: @ David (in London): Your fundamental definition was certainly the operating principle of this show. I never thought for a second of including, say, the Deviants. But I do agree with Dean that very early Pere Ubu, which is a hair before punk hit, already sounds very post-punk ... even though, yes, technically it can't be. But the sounds do cross-pollinate after the fact, and sort of become "one." And now I'll join you in putting a sock in it.

	2:46pm Martyn: I agree with Tony in that some of it wouldve existed anyway. I think punk opened the doors in the sense that after the punk explosion a lot of major record stores were suddenly willing to take a chance in stocking obscure DIY releases so you had a lot of people who may have not been necessarily inspired by the music of punk but who were more inspired by the idea of suddenly having an outlet/ potential new audience for whatever ideas they had. I think TG and NWW are a good example of this

	2:20pm Dean: There's some evidence, too, that punk bands were dubbed "art punk" if they toyed with conventions established in, say, '76. I agree that the Dolls, etc., predate the punk phenomenon. My point was simply that bands contemporaneous with early punk bands already had a "liberated energy" model from which to expand their approaches.

But I do agree with Dean that very early Pere Ubu, which is a hair before punk hit, already sounds very post-punk ... even though, yes, technically it can't be. But the sounds do cross-pollinate after the fact, and sort of become "one." And now I'll join you in putting a sock in it.

I think punk opened the doors in the sense that after the punk explosion a lot of major record stores were suddenly willing to take a chance in stocking obscure DIY releases so you had a lot of people who may have not been necessarily inspired by the music of punk but who were more inspired by the idea of suddenly having an outlet/ potential new audience for whatever ideas they had. I think TG and NWW are a good example of this
