But we've stopped building a real world for people and kids. Were not building an alternative for them to turn away from. Easy to rail against, lots of immediate hip cred to hating on the Apps, but there's no offline vision of the world and what we want it to be outside of consumerism and The Entertainment ®

The skepticism of the new printing press post-Gutenberg was, I think, very different from this. Then, print = information/knowledge = authority/power. Rulers did not want the plebeians accessing it. Now, rulers and their "capitalist outlook" precisely want people to access their tools.

Nevertheless, I have confidence in our youth, in part because I work with them and I have two kids and I know that the doomsday story is perpetuated by old farts like me.

So thankful for this discussion. I’m saving this particular episode to show my kid when the time comes to allow her onto devices. The young people, who can critically think about about “phones”, and the myriad temptations that come with them, will mean a lot more to her than anything I’ll say. Parents now really have their work cut out for themselves.

I read a couple of his books long ago. As I recall he was rather optimistic about having computers in our home. I think he thought they would be liberating, not addicting or being used as tools of surveillance.

I worry a lot about activism and organizing done on social media -- companies that clearly are happy to sell anyone out to the forces of hatred and repression for cash considerations. It seems like a massive risk.
