Yes, Anderson developed lung issues, maybe MJ-use related. But once he was out and they were paying sideman prices rather than a large cut to Anderson, Howe consistently says in interviews for years now that Anderson is never coming back, though Anderson always says he would consider coming back. Maybe an extra-income issue, there, for Howe.

Jon Anderson and Sherman Hemsley were going to record an album about the magical properties of the number 8. Hemsley was a huge prog fan. There's an episode of the Jeffersons where he is dancing to Nektar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIcbXOnvnQY

Unfortunately, I think Howe is making a retirement-plan and Howe-control decision there, not a best-show decision. Maybe he will relent at some point and Anderson will come back. But there's not a huge amount of time left.

Check out the wiki article on math rock for some basic ideas: "Math rock is a style of progressive and indie rock with roots in bands such as King Crimson and Rush as well as 20th-century minimal music composers such as Steve Reich. It is characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), counterpoint, odd time signatures, and extended chords. It bears similarities to post-rock."
