Dean:
"Martin Aston’s Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache: How Popular Music Came Out and Darryl Bullock’s David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBTQ Music fill an urgent need for foundational work in queer popular music studies. Aston and Bullock offer meticulously researched narratives, thick with names, dates, places, song and album titles. Discussions of individual artists and scenes form rhizomatic networks connected through music but also through sex, partying, love, gossip, and friendship. Such detail-rich writing evokes Timothy Lawrence’s fine works on dance music, and I anticipate that these two books, like those by Lawrence, will become essential reading for anyone interested in queer music history."
Mr. Oxford:
Paper Kosmonaut:
I call you bird
I call you riddle (Riddle)
You saw spring on the beach
The horses on the land
I call you fable (Fable)
I call you rain (Rain)
I call you light year
After all that has been said
I call you here and now and real and unreachable
[Chorus]
The whole world in a frame
The tourists pass by
When they are gone you remain
A thousand years away
Does a child see the same light?
On your mother-of-pearl face
I knew you for a moment
In an eternal moment
[Verse 2]
I call you homesick
I call you swallow (Swallow)
On so much news and umbrellas
In blue and white and yellow the wind steals shadow
I call you mirror (Mirror)
I call your heartbeat (Heartbeat)
See you in a shopping street
When you just turn a corner
In every smile
[Chorus]
The whole world in a frame
The tourists pass by
When they're gone you stay standing
A thousand years away
Does a child see the same light?
On your mother-of-pearl face
I knew you for a moment
In an eternal moment
[Bridge]
I call you bird (Bird)
I call you fable (Fable)
I call you riddle (Riddle)
I call you pearl
