Mr. Oxford:

Jan, can you recommend any famous Dutch folk songs that every Dutch person knows?

I like singing songs in different languages and I realized I do not know any famous Dutch language songs. I am thinking of getting this Folkways Records Compilation of Dutch folk songs: folkways.si.edu...

But nevertheless, I thought to ask a Dutch music expert such as you first.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm
Jan Turkenburg:

↳ Mr. Oxford @12:54
I'm sure this is a nice collection, but apart from one or two songs, these are to uncommon and not known by every Dutch person. I know all of them only because they were part of my study and I took a special interest in them to adapt them for performing with my late wife Willeke.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

↳ Mr. Oxford @12:54
The songs really are quite ancient. They are genuine Dutch songs, but the language was already outdated right before the 2nd World war. Most of it stems from the late 19th or early 20th C. Besides, they all are regional. Not that nationally, widely known as it were. Wer weren't learning those songs in primary school any more.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I can't play them now, but I'm sure that most Dutch people know 'Daar was laatst een meisje loos' with a different melody, not the genuine one.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

"Ik heb mijn Wagen Volgeladen" is widely known too. But "Ain boer wol noar zien noaber tou" is in Groningen dialect, for example.
Avatar 1:02pm
Mr. Oxford:

↳ Jan Turkenburg @12:59
Thanks so much, Jan. I just looked it up and it seems like both old and young seem to sing this song. I am noting this one for learning.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yet the latter is often performed by groups and choirs specialising in old Dutch songs.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Jan Turkenburg:

↳ Mr. Oxford @1:02
I can compile a small list for you with traditional songs that are still sung at some places like Kinder Garten and Old people's homes. I'll let you know.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

↳ Mr. Oxford @12:54
Thinking about this, I think the Dutch aren't really trying to save their old folk songs that well. The songs children got taught in the days I was in primary school already often were the old tunes with unrelated modernised lyrics.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

↳ Jan Turkenburg @1:04
I also am quite curious what you'll come up with, Jan.
Avatar 1:05pm

Dankuwel, PK. Noted these down too. While looking up @Ik heb mijn Wagen Volgeladen", I found a version done by Henk Wijngaard, I am pretty sure I have seen his videos before. Lots of trucks.

Thank you Jan and PK for your kind inputs. It is fascinating that there are different kinds of folk music in the Netherlands, how they seem to have evolved and are categorized.

I think I will listen to the Folkaways compilation for sure. I like Jantina Noorman's voice, the soft guitar and the melodies from the samples. I will look up Dutch Children's music too.

Paper Kosmonaut:

A funny thing is that our genre of "sinterklaasliedjes" (Saint Nicholas) almost all stem from the 19th century. Some of them have been slightly modernised but in the songs Saint Nick still arrives on a steam boat. And "Makkers staakt uw wild geraas", "Ja Gewis, dan kwam hij wel" is ancient Dutch which was still included in these songs. At least up til recently.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes and if there's one thing the "Makkers" should do it's to "staak their wild geraas"!

What would you do about hobbyists like me, who make our own? Last I heard -- but it was in the last century -- Dutch firework hobbyists were being allowed informally to shoot at a certain military base. They lamented a regime in which people were allowed to smoke pot but not to make and use fireworks.
  1:34pm

From the sound of it, I'm taking it to be spelled "footenstov" and to mean a heater for your feet. Now I'll look at the entry here.
