The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

I was up on a ladder using heat tool to remove paint from the trim on our large house (my summer assignment from the folks) when I heard White Punks On Dope for the first time. And it was unusual enough to get my attention and I mused about hearing more of the band and about the attention becoming a thing for my friends and I. And that's what did happen. Saw Tubes play three times in Boston/Cambridge in '75-'76. Said so on this very program before. And probably on other shows, too. I only got about 3 stories to my name to tell ...or to repeat. Can I tell it again next week?

I remember hearing a Joe Cuomo/WBAI radio program about Reagan that scared the shit out of me as a kid. I actually have the tape now and I should play it someday.

Joe Cuomo - Ronald Reagan and the Prophecy of Armageddon. WBAI has a great racket where you pay to have the reel digitized from their archives. It was rather expensive. Years later, I looked for it in their digital catalog and some poor sucker has to pay to have the reel digitized again.
I keep meaning to upoad it to Archive Dot Org but keep forgetting.

NYT obit, Sept. 26, 1988

Billy Carter, the irrepressible gas station proprietor and farmer who vaulted to national celebrity in his brother Jimmy's successful campaign for President in 1976, died of cancer of the pancreas yesterday at his home in Plains, Ga. He was 51 years old.

A statement issued by the family said Mr. Carter died ''quietly and peacefully in his sleep at 7 A.M.'' with members of his family at his bedside. His condition was diagnosed a year ago as being inoperable....

Mr. Carter was well-informed, a reader and had a more supple and sophisticated intellect than he usually showed in his public role. His mother, Lillian, said he was ''the smartest'' of her seven children....

Asked later if Billy embarrassed him, Jimmy Carter said quietly, ''I love him.'' Despite his irreverent attitude, the younger brother certainly seemed to reciprocate the sentiment.

One of my retold stories other than Tubes is about Alice. When I saw him and the band in Providence in probably 1977, I was unfavorably struck and surprised by the level of stage costuming and set pieces, and costume changing, and an over the top degree of big busy, colorful themed production number executing. Make-up and pretend hangings and chicken scattering is one thing, a thing I thought I understood the shows of a few years earlier to be, but this was quite another. Rock shows can have gaudy excess, but this was a weary disappointment of the "hoo boy, please hold the wannabe Broadway" kind.
