Consult the work of Peter Dronke for good background on Hildegard. Start with the liner notes he wrote for Sequentia's recordings of her work. Perhaps the pinnacle of early music performance right there.

Byron did lots of interesting thematic albums, have many of them (but not the Jr. Walker one).
  1:05pm
Dean:

I have a strong suspicion that the father of the guy who performed "Happy Ghoul Tide," Brice Armstrong, Jr., penned a piece in the NYT, June 9, 1946, "A Couple of Gringos in Old Mexico," in which Armstrong, Sr., reports that "Beer Barrel Polka" was ubiquitous on Mexican jukeboxes.

My favorite Byron album is probably Nu Blaxploitation, if only for the marvelous live appearance by Biz Markie. The Jr. Walker album is terrific top to bottom.

Confirmed c/o LA Times, Caine played the Skirball Center in May 2000 with a group including Byron, Ralph Alessi, Michael Formanek, and vocalists. Not clear that there was a drummer. Caine's Mahler project.

According to David Yaffe, freelancing for NYT in Dec. '98, Caine did Mahler at the KF "last November" (so '97? or '98?) with Dave Douglas. And a story in Globe & Mail from July '98 confirms that Black drummed in the Mahler group.

Speaking of Mahler, I finally found the review in Time magazine of Yes' Tales from Topographic Oceans that I read on publication in late '74. It stuck with me for "Mahlerian":

"Bright aural mosaics from small motifs are constructed on a Mahlerian scale in this 80-minute work of symphonic rock."

That's the full review. I would have sworn it said, "Mahlerian proportions."
