That I've never seen (I've seen trucks with Lubavache Chasidim where if you answer yes to being Jewish they have you put on Tfillin (a religious item worn on the arm and forehead for prayer), also to shake a lulav (sort of a long bunch of leaves, shaken during prayers on the Succoth holiday). (My general policy is always to tell them I'm not Jewish) A bath actually doesn't seem it would be for every Jewish person-the only ritual bath (mikvah) requirement I know of is for women to purify themselves after menses. (We men, as you know, are always pure and need no cleansing).

For the most part, I say no because I'm going somewhere (it takes a bit of time), and it's followed by some proseletizing, getting you to go to a service or a home to be "M'karev" you (bring you closer to the fold, proseletizing). I grew up in that world, now want to be involved only as much as I care to be involved.

A few years ago, American composer and trombonist PETER ZUMMO discovered a 1984 recording of unreleased material from his Six Songs suite in his archive. Six Songs was the basis for LATERAL PASS (Foom 2014), his award winning score for modern-dance choreographer Trisha Brown’s work of the same name. Material taken from Six Songs can also be heard on his seminal ZUMMO WITH AN X (Loris Bend, 1985/Optimo 2012).

The work is now being released as a new LP, FRAME LOOP. Recorded live and in single takes, it features a stellar line-up of longtime ZUMMO collaborators: ARTHUR RUSSELL on amplified cello, BILL RUYLE on marimba, and MUSTAFA AHMED on congas. ZUMMO plays trombone and euphonium.

So a word of explanation here-first, as in all religions, there are different levels of "crazy" (or extreme observance). The laws concerning touching and menses actually don't apply to the general population, it's only between a husband and a wife (a HUSBAND is not allowed to touch his wife durng her period, until she cleanses at a mikvah after it's finished). Touching NON-FAMILY members of the opposite sex is always forbidden. (Most normal, modern orthodox rabbis would consider not helping on in a health or safety situation to be wrong, even if it involves touching, whatever age the woman is. Orthodox men could never be doctors otherwise).

Well, after spouting off here like some self-hating Jew, I'm off to my Temple, brunch and a trip to Princeton to see a Holocaust related play, Here are the Blueberries. Thanks, Jeff!

Jazz at the Pawnshop: I was thinking of it just yesterday while digging through the bins at Groove Yard, a truly special record store on the Berkeley/Oakland border. Proprietor Rick Ballard (first to distribute hatArt in the US?) had a Domnerus record that was not JatP. Ballard and another customer were chatting about good books they'd recently read. Ballard mentioned a work about Mingus that noted his closeness to Dave Brubeck.

I heard somewhere that Confidence Man is an odd duck. I hope to make my way through the rest of Melville. I've read stories and miscellaneous works, and I enjoyed them all. So, one day, Omoo and the rest, including his poetry. Marx is a sheer joy to read. Righteous anger produces caustic humor and, on occasion, poetry.

actually also just finished Moby-Dick about a month ago. (finally- tried a few times over the years and always bailed). as a friend put it, it’s one of those books where basically every line feels like it could be the epigraph to some other book.

then went right into Miranda July— All Fours. my wife and all her pals had been passing the book around… was an eye opening read for me?

Texturally, I think, The Confidence Man is to Moby-Dick as Finnegan’s Wake is to Ulysses. Both, I’m convinced, contain (almost) everything you need to know about America.

Confidence Man -- for me it felt like an ever expanding revelation of the entire universe as a confidence scheme.
