It's not exactly clear to me why Helen stays with Richard Diamond. She's rich, and he's a jerk. She could have just about anyone she wanted... and Richard fools around with other women and isn't the greatest guy. It's weird they stay together, even by 1949 standards.

I have the author of tonight’s story, James Blish, to thank (or blame) for turning me on to Star Trek. I read a few of his “novelisations” (and the 1970 original novel “Spock Must Die!”) when I was about 12. Then I watched the episodes he adapted!
Each of the chapters in those books converted an episode into prose. I don’t think he ever watched the show; he was just given draft scripts to work with. He must have had a rough time when he got around to adapting the awful 3rd season!

Harlan Ellison once wrote of his close friendship with James Blish, how he was trolled with cruel anonymous letters following Blish’s death, and how he eventually discovered the coward’s identity and confronted him.
It was just one of the examples of fandom’s sociopathic tendencies that Harlan described in his 1990 essay “Xenogenesis”.
