Interesting. Periodically wonder if SoftMachine gets the proper cred for early JazzRawk Fusion - from the Rawk electric rack culture direction... & think about the whole emergence of Jazz influenced improvisation & exaltation of virtuosity in Rawk. How before TheBeatles & Stones - Britishers were into Trad Jazz (Skiffle almost like its scruffy kid brother on some scenes ?) - & say Manfred Mann & TheZombies while solidly in the BeatPop column might betray this a bit... Bruce & Baker of Cream certainly were versed in Jazz - & Mitch Mitchell with Hendrix brought something I think still under recognized to this day (oddly enuff)...

They're all speaking dialects of the same language. You can go back and listen to Brubeck on Circadian Dysrhythmia for eg., and hear the music really pushing outward. Softs went farther, maybe because of more eclectic influences. Robert Wyatt's family home growing up was like a local research lab. As kids, they brought a lot of Blly Higgins, and Ornette, and well...everybody....and they brought the electricity...and the intensity of the '60s. Bottom lin, though, is they're travelling to the same territory, and they have the same maps.

Got Dylan's 'Philosophy of Modern Songs' book from the Library ...he talks about the Grateful Dead as being like a BeBop band. TheDead's whole orientation was unlike others' I posit - out of the Acid Tests - very coy with the Muse. Taking things very seriously as dedicated Musicians ...but suspicious of assertive ambition & formal organization in other senses. There was a vibe they didn't want to scare off & make demands upon. That would be too 'Show Biz'... Obvsly when they learned of the Allmans they recognized similarities. I think of when the Fillmores let bands play all night til dawn as some rarified halcyon thing...

Hi String-0. It was 1971, Cafe Au Go Go on Bleecker St, NYC. (I seem to recall that Eric Anderson opened! Sic.)
The quartet was with Wyatt, still there singing, drumming. They played stuff from the "Third" and "Fourth" albums. Mike Ratledge /wailed/ on organ.

a fine live show is 6/22/73, easily available to listen online (like on archive.org or youtube). listen to a charlie miller soundboard
or pick a show from june 1976. they aren't too wild or crazy, but tend to be good playing.
then there's the may 1977 shows......

archive.org has an entire grateful dead section. just about any recorded show is there. i always go for Betty Cantor or Charlie Miller soundboards. rarely want to hear audience recordings, but there are some exceptions to that.
the thing about the Dead is that there are "eras" or "periods", and they vary greatly. you might hate one "period" while another could speak to you.
  11:29am
Dean:

Dead fan since Workingman's Dead, courtesy of my schoolmates' siblings, when I was twelve or so. But (contrary to my regular claim that I attended every Dead show ever), I paid them little attention until recent years. Their musicianship and eagerness to work without a safety net amazes me to this day. Here's a good interview with the three surviving members shortly after Phil Lesh died. Even at this stage in their very long careers it's clear that they are devoted to the music. They're an American, if not an international treasure.
