	🥁 ♥ 9:57am Listener Gregory: Speaking of music, I actually left the house last night to go to Northampton, MA to hear Sylvie Courvoisier play a solo show. It began a bit strangely, as she appeared wearing an untucked shirt about 4 sizes too large for her and said almost shyly, “I will try to play some music for you tonight.” This is not a confident introduction. Then, with no delay whatsoever, she was pounding the insides of the piano as if the strings had killed her puppy. It was a virtuoso performance, both on the keys and playing with preparations and attacks on the string. It drew as much on classical music as jazz, I think, but with strong hints of Don Pullen in her approach.

How much any of this was prepared vs. improvised was impossible to tell (for me). Anyway, if Ms. Courvoisier comes to your town, I would recommend seeing her.

The director of the Arts Center gave a quick introduction and told us that in the first festival 30 years ago the players were Jaki Byard (mispronounced), Stanley Cowell, and Paul Bley. There were sounds of disbelief from the audience, and she commented, "So, I guess they were pretty good?"

	🥁 ♥ 9:57am Listener Gregory: Speaking of music, I actually left the house last night to go to Northampton, MA to hear Sylvie Courvoisier play a solo show. It began a bit strangely, as she appeared wearing an untucked shirt about 4 sizes too large for her and said almost shyly, “I will try to play some music for you tonight.” This is not a confident introduction. Then, with no delay whatsoever, she was pounding the insides of the piano as if the strings had killed her puppy. It was a virtuoso performance, both on the keys and playing with preparations and attacks on the string. It drew as much on classical music as jazz, I think, but with strong hints of Don Pullen in her approach.
