From rousay: '“it was always worth it” documents a romantic parting of ways. The voice to text is sourced from various love letters over the last six years. Domestic “field recordings” from the last week of the relationship fade in and out while synthesisers hold everything together.'

Speaking of music, I actually left the house last night to go to Northampton, MA to hear Sylvie Courvoisier play a solo show. It began a bit strangely, as she appeared wearing an untucked shirt about 4 sizes too large for her and said almost shyly, “I will try to play some music for you tonight.” This is not a confident introduction. Then, with no delay whatsoever, she was pounding the insides of the piano as if the strings had killed her puppy. It was a virtuoso performance, both on the keys and playing with preparations and attacks on the string. It drew as much on classical music as jazz, I think, but with strong hints of Don Pullen in her approach.

At the end, surprise guest Ned Rothernberg (inaudibly announced) appeared with a clarinet, and they did a much softer and more lyrical piece to end the show. How much any of this was prepared vs. improvised was impossible to tell (for me). Anyway, if Ms. Courvoisier comes to your town, I would recommend seeing her.

The Courvoisier concert was part of the Northampton Center for the Arts annual piano festival. The director of the Arts Center gave a quick introduction and told us that in the first festival 30 years ago the players were Jaki Byard (mispronounced), Stanley Cowell, and Paul Bley. There were sounds of disbelief from the audience, and she commented, "So, I guess they were pretty good?"

Have recently read Joe McPhee's autobio and was stunned to learn he had to have all of his teeth removed in recent years due to infection.

I confess I wasn't immediately racing to listen to a three-percussionist record, but this one's sweet as hell.

This is a good album cover with market value. The customer can see what they're getting into. Not bluegrass, nor freak folke.

Yeah, he was in serious pain last time he played around here and was talking how he would have to get his teeth pulled out and how he would have to relearn to play
