I think Threadgill plays a little, but mostly conducts these days.

it was a trio trio (w. Vijay Iyer and Danfis Prieto), he mostly played alto flute, but when played sax, he sounded like his old self, but maybe not quite as intense. There was one rhapsodic piece where some screaming high notes might have been in order, but he stayed in lower register. Great show over all.

He explicitly told me he had not made the comparison.

I recall that Luxman went through a slow time, the '80s or '90s, perhaps, before returning with superior gear.

Just checked the dCS integrated SACD/DVD player, so, not the top-of-the-line transport+DAC combination: ~$40k.

WFMU doesn't hype it anymore, but ages ago the website featured a Random Archives Generator. You click on it and it provides a link to ANY archive on the vast WFMU archives server. It's like playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey at a birthday party! It's an amazing way to discover new and (especially) old programs that have aired on WFMU. The Random Archives Generator still works: wfmu.org...

The actual solo is quite short, but now that I know, it's obviously him. How did I not detect that at the time? Probably never thought of connecting the two of them. The coda also has some Rahsaanisms.

The other night we watched another Lumet, "The Anderson Tapes" (1971), a sort of paranoid freakout heist caper, featuring Sean Connery trying halfheartedly to hide his accent, a young Christopher Walken in his first film appearance, and a part-funky, part-bloopy soundtrack by Quincy Jones.

Not only does Jeff bring us new music every week, he provides an example of personal rectitude that has had a concrete effect on my life. Example? When I drive on the Taconic State Parkway, I now keep quite close to the speed limit the entire time, due to his strong advice. This has probably prevented me from getting multiple speeding tickets.
