… in what i imagine is an honor, was listening this week to several 12”mixes of vintage early 80s Heaven 17 songs. Besides the obviously great Fascist Groove Thang (who knew there was a live soul version), “Are Everything”, “Let Me Go” & “Height of the Fighting (Hey La Hu)” etc…it provided some glee😃. The 12”mixes of 80s ABC & Flocked Seagulls can’t be far behind. Spandau Ballet 🩰 anybody?, maybe Tears for Fears.

i *generally* can't stand synth-based 80s pop; but there are shining exceptions. i Love that heaven 17 album, and the flock of seagulls' first album and ep.
i have a 12" of height of the fighting with a rad percussion-heavy "dub" version.
- and tears for fears were a notch above their contemporaries, in my opinion.

Despite having musical friend & artist cousin appreciating Robert Palmer, I somehow avoided engaging with his career. i now hear the error of my ways. That track was alotta fun & would like to hear that 1980 album. By the time “addicted to love” rolled out - I wasn’t gonna persue. Other fave albums?

‘twas obsessed with ‘franks wild years’ album. Maybe the most fun to revisit within his 80s trilogy. Such a unique album. Lucky enough to have attended a Beacon Theatre show of Tom featuring that album & ‘trilogy’. Great visuals & vibe to that period.

Ok - i will start with “Clues”! 1980 was that weird transitional period before production/studios had given up organic sounding analog & just prior to dabbling/launching into synthetic electronics everything. I tried it all - voracious appetite as a youth.

Oh yeah, "St James Infirmary," another song that like "House of the Rising Sun" is very associated with New Orleans, but which as I found, originated somewhere else entirely. I assumed "SJI" was a NOLA song because traditionally hospitals here were called infirmaries (I was born at Touro Infirmary). Turns out it's an old British ballad about a soldier dying of syphilis of all things.

@coel,mariano,matthew: re those 80s 12”mixes of songs that were ok already, yet the dub mix B-sides, etc were often better than anything. Love that Heaven 17 dub. At that time, I was blown away by the glorious mixes & sounds on the 12” vinyls from YELLO (especially 3rd album vintage: ’gotta say yes to another excess’ 1983). When audio sampling member Carlos Perón was in peak form & before he departed. Imo, Perón’s 1st solo album (‘Impersonator’ 1981) is still special & worthwhile sounding! Ps: I too jumped outta new wave & into all things ‘krautrock’ and was obsessed with ‘recommended records’ - even corresponded with Chris Cutler a few times. What a cornucopia of riches that caché of ReRecords was & still is‼️

something i'd heard made me buy a yello album at the time ("stella") but then i rarely listened to it. never heard the extended mixes. (well maybe at the clubs)
but also i had only a casual interest in krautrock. i don't think i ever heard can until the 1990s. it might've changed the game plan if i'd heard it a decade or 2 earlier.
...but i took a whole other course through those times and those genres. "new wave" was always a precarious relationship with me. "punk" too i guess. i was most passionate about some punk, but was particular.

(not likely interesting to anyone)

oh goodness me!, don’t get me started!…
The Homosexuals collection blew my mind on its arrival, so did their issue of the very hard to find at the time Japanese only WHA HA HA albums!
ZNR, ART BEARS (esp the 3rd!), those mind expanding ReRec Quarterly Samplers with the custom silk-screened covers & extensive booklets!, all Faust reissues (‘Tapes’ was my fave), Peter Biegvad albums, Slapp Happy: ‘Acnalbasac Noom’ issue, CASSIBER, etc etc … got my copy of crazy Yugoslavian band: Begnagrad from Cutler. R.I.O: anything by Samla Mammas Manna, Etron Fou Leloublanc, Stormy Six, Art Zoyd, Univers Zero, etc. We could be here all night. I procured that cool silk screened mega box set of their 7”singles. Everything I could get my hands on & mind wrapped around.

my screen froze (too many words?) haha. Well, I’m interested. Re Yello’s “Stella” (thier 4th) just after Perón left. Imo, still great (last of the original vibe) kinda changed after that one. Their 1st 4 are their best material. Have several others that are worthwhile (but listening to/streaming their mega mixes via interwebs is where it’s at today). Yea, circa 1982? Hearing CAN (& finding 5 of their best albums all in mint condition one day) was a revelation. I was 16? & it changed my view of post punk cynicism towards jam bands & utilizing the studio as an instrument. What a way to glean gems from extended jam sessions. I tried to collect all material related to CAN. the Holger Czukay albums are still faves to this day. I was definitely into all things punk & esp DIY post punk small pressings etc. (esp European stuff). The extended family tree of Jim Welton etc was a huge cornucopia of delights. The Just Measurers, & L’Voag, Milk from Cheltenham, Amos & Sara, Lowest Note Organ, etc etc …
